Philadelphia, Pa. - The Post University baseball team showed off the bat in game one and the arm in game two as it got off on the right foot in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play, sweeping a doubleheader at USciences, 6-3 and 2-0.
The Eagles now move to 6-9 overall and 2-0 in the CACC. USciences falls to 1-11 overall and 1-4 in the CACC.
Game one was a back and forth affair early on as the Eagles got on the board in the top of the first and took a 1-0 lead after an RBI double by junior Erik Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) scored freshman Alex Wright (Butler, N.J.).
USciences answered in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single from Matt Miniconzi. USciences threatened to score again, but Daniel Pineda was forced into a double play by senior starting righthander Don Crook (Meriden, Conn.) to end the threat.
The Rodriguez-Wright combination would strike again in the top of the third as Rodriguez drove in Wright with another double, putting the Eagles up, 2-1. With one out and Rodriguez on second, freshman Don Walsh (Hamilton, N.J.) hit an RBI single to put Post up, 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Miniconzi would hit another RBI single followed by a bases loaded walk from Pineda to tie the game at 3-3. Walsh would again get out of the one out bases loaded jam as he got the next two batters to fly out.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, sophomore Joey Picone (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles to set up Walsh for a three-run homer to give the Eagles the 6-3 lead.
It'd be all the Eagles would need as Crook and freshman Nick Arnold (West Islip, N.Y.) finished the final three innings.
Crook got the win, giving up three earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Arnold got the two-inning save and striking out two.
Walsh and Rodriguez each finished 3-for-5 for the Eagles. Walsh had four RBI and Rodriguez, two.
Game Two
Graduate student Mike Costello (Manassas, Va.), pitched a complete game gem, striking out 12 and giving up just five hits and two walks in Post's 2-0 win in game two.
Both of the Eagles runs came in a wild top of the fifth.Â
With runners on first and third, freshman David Sarmiento (Miami, Fla.) stole second and classmate Maxime Robillard (Blainville, Quebec) stole home to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Alex Wright would then reach on a fielding error which scored Sarmiento, giving the Eagles the 2-0 lead they would hold on for the rest of the game.
The star of the game, however, was Costello. He struck out the side in the fourth inning and did not allow a runner to reach third base.
