Eagles Lacrosse Falls In Battle With Pace, 11-9

Buchas and McDermott With Two Goals and Assist Each

WATERBURY, Conn. – Four Eagles scored two goals each but it wasn't enough as the Post men's lacrosse team was defeated by Pace 11-9 at LaMoy Field on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomores Luke McDermott (New Milford, Conn.) and Trevor Buchas (Bristol, Conn.) each had two goals and an assist on the day.

After losing the opening face-off, Eagles' senior goalkeeper Anthony DeRosa (Toms River, N.J.) made one of his nine first-quarter saves to give Post the ball. On the ensuing possession freshman Frank Nichols Jr. (Oceanside, Calif.) found Buchas for a goal to put the Eagles in front 1-0.

Post controlled possession through the middle of the quarter, outshooting the Setters 5-2. Junior Colby Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) put the Eagles in front 2-0 with a score with 6:34 left in the quarter. Post drew a penalty on the next face-off and Pace quickly scored with a man-up. The Setters added one more in the quarter to tie the game 2-2 after one.

Pace took a 4-2 lead in the second with two early goals. The Eagles got back on track with 6:50 left in the first half as McDermott picked up a ground ball off a turnover and beat the keeper. Post won the ensuing faceoff and McDermott scored once again off an assist from sophomore Kyle Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.) to tie the game heading into the half.

The teams each scored an early in the third quarter. After falling behind 5-4, Treat scored for the Eagles with a man-up to tie the game. Post drew a two-minute penalty and Pace capitalized by scoring twice. The Setters took their largest lead of the game at 8-5 with 5:57 left in the third quarter. Buchas added his second goal of the game late in the quarter to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Post allowed an early score in the fourth but senior Matt Edwin (Stamford, Conn.) answered back with his first goal of the season with a man down. The Eagles cut the deficit to 9-8 with 5:42 left as sophomore Alsharif Blackman (Easton, Pa.) beat the keeper.

Pace scored once again on their next possession to go back up by two with 3:20 left. The Eagles forced a turnover after the face-off and called a quick timeout. Blackman scored out of the break to make the score 10-9 with 2:01 left. The Setters added another goal and won the ensuing face-off to hold on to the victory.

DeRosa made 14 saves in the cage and he and Blackman led Post with five ground balls each. The Eagles were outshot 41-24 on the day, but 20 of Post's shots were on target.

Post is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 28 on the road at American International. Last season the Eagles defeated the Yellow Jackets 11-9. Face-off in Springfield, Mass. is set for noon.
