Men’s Lacrosse Drops Opener To Dowling 18-9

Buchas Scores Five Goals In Eagles’ Debut

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's lacrosse team lost its season-opener to #12 Dowling, 18-9, on a snowy Saturday afternoon at LaMoy Field. Sophomore Trevor Buchas (Bristol, Conn.) scored five times for the Eagles in his debut.

The Eagles quickly got on the board as a shot by sophomore Luke McDermott (New Milford, Conn.) bounced off the Golden Lions' keeper, then off Buchas and into the net to put Post in front 1-0 just 16 seconds in.

Dowling answered back with two scores, both by Frank Iaconetti to pull in front 2-1 with 12:18 left in the first. Buchas tied the score minutes later with a goal off a pass from sophomore Kyle Shannon (Stanhope, N.J.). The Golden Lions closed out the quarter with four straight goals to hold a 6-2 advantage after one.

Junior Chris Lommer (Lancaster, N.Y.) put Post on the board in the second quarter after a turnover by Dowling. On their ensuing possession, the Eagles had two shots saved by Frank Sommers before a penalty by the Golden Lions gave Post a man advantage. Buchas capitalized on the situation with his third goal of the day off a pass from senior Brian Beatson (Falls Church, Va.). Beatson finished with a goal and three assists.

Dowling took control from there and pulled ahead 14-4 before a late score by junior Colby Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) made the score 14-5 at the half.

Beatson scored with 1:50 left in the third quarter with the Eagles up two men. Treat took control of the ensuing faceoff and McDermott beat the keeper as Post trailed 16-7 through three quarters.

Buchas scored his final two goals in the fourth quarter, both of passes from Beatson.

Dowling held a 37-35 advantage in shots. McDermott led the Eagles with nine tries on the day. Post had 36 ground balls on the afternoon, led by sophomore Alsharif Blackman (Easton, Pa.) with nine. Blackman was also 11-28 on face-offs.

Post returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25 against Pace. The game will be played at SUNY-Purchase in Purchase, N.Y. Face-off is set 3p.m.
