Late Goal From Mertz Propels Eagles Against Felician

Post Has ShutOut Eight of Last Nine Opponents

Waterbury, Conn. – Sophomore Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany), scored a goal in the 87th minute on a free kick leading the Eagles to a 1-0 win over Felician on Tuesday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.

With the win, Post moves to 7-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the CACC, putting them in first place. Felician now moves to 5-6 overall and 5-4 in the CACC.

The game had a scoreless first half as both offenses couldn't get quality opportunities near the goal.

In the second half, Post controlled most of the pace of play, pressuring the Felician defense throughout, eventually forcing a foul and yellow card on Felician's Mikaylah Davies in the 87th minute allowing Mertz to take a free kick.

With a wall in front of her, Mertz bent the shot around the right side of the wall and past goalkeeper Bjonda Ademi to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead and eventual win. The goal was the eighth of the season for Mertz which is third in the CACC.

Coach Matt Micros said some changes in the second half allowed for more opportunities. "We did have a few more opportunities in the second," Micros said. We made a few adjustments positionally and emphasized playing a more quality ball in the final third. Our team defended well again. Tough stretch coming up, but we will keep battling.

With the win, the Eagles have shutout eight of their last nine opponents.

Up next for the Post is a road contest at Wilmington at 1 p.m. on October 17.
