Eagles Drop 1-0 Heatbreaker To Mercy

Mavericks Score Winner With 17 Seconds Remaining

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – A set-piece goal with 17 seconds remaining gave Mercy a 1-0 victory over the Post University women's soccer team on Saturday morning. The Eagles loss drops the Eagles to 1-1 on the young season.

With little time remaining in regulation, the Eagles committed a foul just outside their own box to give the Mavericks a free-kick. MacKenzie Cochrane found the back of the net on the far side to give Mercy the narrow victory.

Post outshot the Mavericks 5-4 in the first half, led by senior Renel Dennis (Queens, N.Y.) with two. Dennis had a chance to put the Eagles in front in 8th minute. After intercepting a clearance, Dennis booted it from 20 yards out, but Nicole Augustine was able to make the diving stop.

In the 17th minute, the Eagles fed the ball ahead to sophomore Valerie Moore (Bloomfield, Conn.) who ripped a shot that was punched away for a corner kick.

Early in the second half, Dennis and sophomore Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) both had shots blocked. Mercy outshot the Eagles 12-5 in the second, but four saves by junior Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) kept the game scoreless.

Dennis led Post with four shots on the day; the Eagles had 10 as a team, including four on goal. Morgan made five saves in net.

Post will look to bounce back in its home and conference opener against Caldwell on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Kickoff at LaMoy Field is set for 4 p.m.
