Post Scores Early And Often In Dominating Win

Dennis Scores Twice

Waterbury, Conn. -
Post women's soccer team got its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference season off on the right foot, then the left foot, and then the right a few more times and dominated the defending conference champs and 2013 NCAA tournament participant Caldwell Cougars in a 5-0 shutout Wednesday at LaMoy Field.

The Eagles now stand at 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the CACC. They are 1-0 at LaMoy Field.

In just the second minute, freshman sensation Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) scored her second goal of the season after gathering the rebound from freshman Angela Ciaramella's (Wolcott, Conn.) shot. It was a sign of things to come.

Senior Renel Dennis (Queens, N.Y.) scored back to back goals 11 minutes apart. In the 11th minute she took a lead pass from sophomore Valerie Moore (Bloomfield, Conn.) and effortlessly put it in the back of the net behind goalkeeper, Robin Franchi. Dennis would strike again in the 22nd minute after taking a long and beautiful through ball from junior Lexxi Carroll (Plainville, Conn.) to put the Eagles up 3-0.

Post was stellar in net as well, as junior Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) stopped two shots in the first half, including a penalty kick in the 30th minute by Kelly Folk, which energized the crowd and the team.

The scoring barrage slowed down for a bit and looked like it would be just a three goal lead going into the half, but Carroll took a cross from sophomore Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) with three seconds left and nailed home the fourth goal of the half for the Eagles.

Post cooled down the scoreboard in the second half, but the defensive intensity forced the Cougars to just two shots on goal in the second half, both of which were stopped by goalkeeper Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn.), who subbed in for Morgan.

However, the Eagles would sneak one more goal in - with one man down - in the 86th minute as senior Brina Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) had an open shot after senior Alison Mrowinski's (Syracuse, N.Y.) shot was stopped by goalkeeper, Kylie Whalen.

Sophomore Brooke Lawlor (Rocky Hill, Conn.) received a red card in the 62nd minute after a foul near the penalty box.

Up next for the Eagles is their first CACC road game at Chestnut Hill on Sept. 13 at noon.
