Eagles Score Late, Stay Undefeated In CACC Play

Mertz Puts Home WInner

Waterbury, Conn. - A goal on a penalty kick from freshman Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) in the 86th minute lifted the Post University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Dominican. With the win, the Eagles improved to 5-1 overall, and 4-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The Eagles have also won four straight games, their longest winning streak since 2011, where they won five straight games in the middle of that season.

Scoring for the Eagles did not come as easy as it did in previous games, but they were able to get on the board in the 25th minute as sophomore Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) took a set piece from senior Tessa Dunster (Stamford, Conn.) and put it past Dominican goalkeeper, Gina Yannette for her second goal of the season.

Both teams struggled to get any offensive opportunities going, but Dominican was finally able to get on the board in the 66th minute on a penalty kick from Elisa Falzarano after Post was called for a handball inside the box. Freshman Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn.) got a piece of the ball on the kick, which ricocheted off the crossbar and rolled in to tie the game, 1-1.

The game looked destined for overtime until Dominican was called for a foul in the box after the two teams tangled for possession for a number of seconds. Mertz then calmly put the ball passed Yannette for the game winner.

With the loss, Dominican falls to 1-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the CACC.

Carroll - who finished with three saves - received the win in net, and is now 1-0. Junior Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) played the first half and finished with two saves.

With the amazing run the Eagles have been on to start the season, they are now ranked 10th in the NSCAA East Region rankings for the first time in school history.

Up next for the Eagles is a tough road test against defending CACC champion, Holy Family. The game is slated for a noon start.
