History
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Â The Post University women's volleyball team split its doubleheader on Saturday, the final day of the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational Tournament. The Eagles started the morning on a strong note by defeating Clark Atlanta in three sets. Post finished the tournament falling to the talented squad from Puerto Rico- Mayaguez 3-1. The Eagles went 2-2 in Boca Raton, and improved to 4-3 on the season.
Post 3, Clark Atlanta 0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-5) It was all Eagles in the early matchup against Clark Atlanta. The Panthers seemed to have no answer for the Eagles powerhouse duo of senior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) and sophomore
Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.). Wilman led all scorers with 13 kills and German tacked on another 12 and hit for the third best percentage in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) history at .800. Senior
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) set all but three kills with 31 assists. Post only allowed 31 points in the entire match with exceptional defensive prowess. Junior
Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) absorbed most of the pressure with 12 digs.
Â
Clark Atlanta captured the first point, but that was the last lead the Panthers would hold in the set. With confident defensive play, the Eagles never allowed their opposition to find a rhythm on offense. Post was able to put together a series of runs, one of which a six point swing to take control of the set 20-10. Those were the ingredients for a Post set victory of 25-13.
Â
The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set, but Post came storming back, responding with a 6-0 run. Shortly thereafter the Eagles added to their lead with an 8-0 run. Post went on to win the set again by a score of 25-13.
Â
The Eagles made quick work of the Panthers in the third set only allowing five points. The Post offense seemed to be really clicking highlighted by a 10-0 run to take a commanding 18-2 lead. Junior
Mariah Morris (Vilseck, Germany) made the final kill to give the Eagles their second victory of the tournament as they defeated Clark Atlanta in three sets.
Â
Puerto Rico- Mayaguez 3, Post 1 (25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20) German had a tremendous night for herself as she recorded a season high 18 kills and five blocks. Wilman contributed with a double-double, 12 kills and 10 digs. Slyaktina tallied 40 assists and Alvarez added 11 digs. Despite a strong effort, the Eagles fell to Puerto Rico 3-1.
Â
Both teams battled right from the first serve, and found themselves in a lock 10-10. As play progressed, Post continued to keep the score close, trailing only 20-19. Puerto Rico gave a final push on a 5-0 run and won the set 25-19.
Â
The second set played out similar to the first, as Post kept it close early on but momentum took a turn, and the Eagles were quickly down 19-9 as the opposition made a four point run. Puerto Rico went on to win the second set 25-16.
Â
The Eagles were determined not to go down without a fight. Post found themselves up 22-20, after even play by both squads. The Eagles had enough left in the tank to score three straight points and win the set 25-21. The fourth and final set played out in similar fashion as the previous, but rather Puerto Rico came out on top tallying three straight points to take the set 25-20.
Post continues its road trip when they visit Bloomfield College in their first CACC match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 16. First serve in Bloomfield, N.J. is scheduled for 6 p.m.
