Southern N.H. Defeats Post In Non-Conference Battle

Ferreira and Kone Score For Eagles

MANCHESTER, Conn. – Two second half goals were the difference as the No. 25 Post University men's soccer team fell to No. 1 Southern New Hampshire 4-2 on Wednesday night at Larkin Field in Manchester, N.H. The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the young season.

The Penmen controlled play early in the first half, outshooting Post 8-0 before Kenny Doublette scored the first goal after a scramble in front of the net. The Eagles answered quickly as junior Gustavo Ferreira (Belo Horizante, Brazil) bent a long set piece shot past the keeper to knot the score 1-1 in the 21st minute.

Momentum swung the Eagles way as they began to control possession from there. Seniors Mamadou Balde (Conakry, Guniea) and Souleymane Kone (Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire) each had chances at the goal. Brian Grisell headed in a cross from Jose Seoane in the 43rd minute to put Southern New Hampshire ahead heading into the break.

"We got outplayed in the first half, but I'm glad how regained composure in the second and tied it with a brilliant goal by Solo [Kone]," said head coach Ted Haley.

Kone knotted the score in the 77th minute with a goal from the corner of the box off a pass from junior Francisco Sastre (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Southern New Hampshire took the lead in the 83rd minute as Dominic Samuel booted home the rebonud off a free kick by Jonathan Lupinelli.

The Eagles final chance came in the 89th minute as a shot from Sastre from 25 yards out hit the crossbar. Ryan Reynolds added a late goal for the Penmen.

"Unfortunately two errors by our keeper skewed the score line and gave them the victory. We had a fantastic chance late on a shot by Chico [Sastre]," added Haley.

Sophomore Serigne Baba Gaye (Dakar, Senegal) made six stops in net for Post.

The Eagles open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Chestnut Hill. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
