Late Comeback Falls Short Against Saint Anselm

Bogues and Mareno Finish With 17 Points Each



WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team cut a double-digit deficit to four points late, but were unable to complete the comeback as it fell to top-ranked Saint Anselm 76-68 at the Drubner Center on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
 
With 3:30 remaining the Hawks held a 71-58 advantage. Freshman Travis Flagg (Queens, N.Y.) hit two from the line. After a turnover by Saint Anselm, freshman Joseph Lockwood (London, England) cleaned up a miss and put one in to cut the deficit to nine points. Lockwood finished with 12 points and eight boards.
 
Saint Anselm hit one of two a free throws on its next possession and on the other end senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) made a jumper to make the score 72-64 with 2:15 left. Chris Santo turned the ball over back to Post and Mareno quickly hit a layup.
 
The Hawks missed a shot next time down the floor and Mareno scored against to bring the Eagles within four at 72-68 with 44 seconds remaining. Post tried a force a late turnover but were forced to foul. Saint Anselm hit its final four free-throws to close out the victory.
 
Post started the game out hot from the floor hitting eight of its first 10 shots to build a 20-11 lead with 12:56 left in the first half. The Eagles were 3-for-3 from distance during the stretch with Bogues hitting twice from outside.
 
Saint Anselm chipped away at the lead and pulled in front with 7:56 until halftime after a three-pointer by Victor Joshua. The Hawks led 37-33 at the break. Post shot 59.9 percent from the field in the first half.
 
The Hawks extened their lead with five straight points to start the second. They posted their largest lead at 58-43 after eight straight points by Mike McCahey with 10:38 left.
 
Post shot a season-best 48.3 percent on the day.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 31 against another Northeast-10 opponent American International. Tip-off at Drubner is set for 2 p.m.
