WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team returns home this week for two games. The Eagles host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Bloomfield on Wednesday and Northeast-10 opponent Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon.
 
Last Time Out: New Haven 70, Post 63 – Recap | Box Score
Down by double-digits with two minutes left the Post University men's basketball team cut the deficit to four but was unable to complete the comeback in a 70-63 loss at New Haven on Tuesday night. Senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) led a trio of Eagles in double figures with 14 points.
 
Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) nailed a three off a dish from Bogues with 56 seconds remaining to trim the Chargers' lead to 65-61. After two free throws by New Haven freshman Tyler Desrosiers (Agawam, Mass.) hit from distance to pull the Eagles within four points.
 
With 27 seconds left New Haven missed two from the line, but Post was unable to take advantage as the Chargers held on for the victory.
 
The Eagles held a 15-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
 
Scouting the Bears
Bloomfield is 3-4 on the year and 2-1 in the CACC. The Bears had their three-game win streak snapped last time out with a 92-80 loss to Dominican. Bloomfield is the top scoring team in the conference at 85.6 points per game and its entire starting five averages over 13.0 points per game, led by Marvin Williams at 17.7. The Bears also allow the most points in the league at 87.0 per outing.

Post is 8-17 against Bloomfield dating back to 2003, but has lost the last six meetings. The Eagles fare well at Drubner in the series with a 7-5 record.

Scouting the Hawks
Saint Anselm enters the week at 7-1 overall and ranked atop the D2SIDA East Region Poll. The Hawks have won five straight including a 75-57 victory over Stonehill last time out. Chris Santo is fourth in the NE-10 at 20.6 points per game. Mike McCahey is averaging 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. Saint Anselm is ranked 30th in the nation in scoring offense at 85.6 points per game

The Eagles have not defeated the Hawks in seven previous meetings. In the last two games at the Drubner Center, Post has only lost by a combined six points.

Hitting the Glass
This season Post has outrebounded its opponents in all but two games this season is second in the CACC with 41.0 rebounds per game, including a season-high 48 in its victory over Concordia. The Eagles have hit the offensive glass hard, holding a 122-85 advantage over its opponents this year. Post's offensive rebound average of 15.25 per game is good for 21st in Division II. The Eagles have grabbed a season-high 21 offensive boards twice in games against Daemen and Concordia.
 
Limiting Giveaways
Post is 13th nationally, averaging just 10.4 turnovers per game. The Eagles have had less or the same amount of turnovers than their opponents in all but one game this season. In three games this year, Post has committed less than 10 turnovers, with a season-low of seven coming in the opener against Roberts Wesleyan.
 
Mareno Piling Up Weekly Honors
Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) was named CACC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 1 for the second consecutive week. The freshman led the team with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in the victory over Stonehill. This season Mareno leads the team and is near the top of the conference with 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
 
Starting From Scratch
The Eagles return just one player from a year ago in sophomore Rokas Lapsys (Vilnius, Lithuania). Lapsys appeared in just three games, averaging 9.3 minutes per outing. This year's roster features 13 players including six freshman, two sophomores, four juniors, and one senior. The players come from all over the globe with two from England in freshmen Kyle Squire (Cheshire, England) and Joseph Lockwood (London, England) and one from Australia, junior Shannon McCready (Melbourne, Australia) and Lithuania.
 
Preseason Poll
Post was picked to finish fifth in the CACC North Division this year. The Eagles received 41 votes. Bloomfield and Philadelphia were selected to finish first in the North and South Divisions, respectively.
 
On the Horizon
Post hosts Northeast-10 opponent American International on Wednesday, Dec. 31. Game time at Drubner is set for 2 p.m.
