Eagles Edge Holy Family, Claim Second Playoff Spot

Post Defeats Holy Family 3-2

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team defeated Holy Family University on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Drubner Center. The Eagles roll to their 14th Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory of the season in a five-set marathon. The set scores were 25-22, 25-12, 23-25, 19-25, and 15-6. Prior to the match, Post celebrated the athletic achievements of the lone senior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) in honor of Senior Day.

Sharing the offensive responsibility, four Eagles finished with double-digit kills on the match. Senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) led the way landing 13 kills and added 10 in the dig department. Sophomore Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.) and junior Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) both recorded 11 kills, German also added 11 digs and three service aces. Sophomore Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) tallied 10 kills and seven of the 20 Eagle blocks. Slyaktina played her role effectively finishing with 48 assists and junior libero Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) handled much of the pressure defensively with 24 digs.

Post started the first set with a 4-0 run highlighted by two service aces by first-year Cassandra Drogan (Dover Plains, N.Y.). The Eagles quickly fell behind 6-4 after a Tiger six-point swing. The Eagles continued to work from behind as the set progressed, but found their rhythm behind a sequence of German services. Post rattled off a 7-0 run and sprung ahead 23-18. The Tigers made a late push to close their deficit to two points, but Brown brought it to a halt with a ferocious kill to give the Eagles a 25-22 set victory.

The early goings of the second set played out evenly and the back-and-forth action left Post with an 11-10 advantage. From this point forward, the Eagles put together one of their longest drives of the season. Post steamrolled the Tigers with a 14-2 run, featuring the team's many offensive weapons and again, behind 10 consecutive services by German. The Eagles took the 2-0 set advantage winning the second set 25-12.

Holy Family started strong in the third set and pulled away 14-8, much to do with a 7-1 run early on. The Eagles recovered from the deficit and reclaimed the lead 22-20 with a 6-0 run. The Tigers managed a 5-1 run down the stretch to win 25-23. Post never held a lead in the fourth set; the Eagles managed to keep the Tigers within reach but were unable to connect for a game-changing run. Holy Family went on to win the set 25-19 and even the set series 2-2.

The Eagles were determined as they broke their huddle to begin the fifth and final set. Post crept out to an early 4-3 lead but poured it on with a 10-1 run to cruise to a 15-6 set win. The Eagles have won five straight and will look to carry that momentum into the playoffs.

Post finishes the regular season with a 14-5 CACC record, and 19-10 overall. Holy Family rounds out its regular season at 10-9 in conference play, and 12-18 overall.

The Eagles claim the second seed in the CACC North Division and will play host to the third-seeded Rams of Philadelphia University of the South Division in the Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the Drubner Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
