Waterbury, Conn. - Post University women's soccer team's quest for its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship fell just short as it dropped a 3-0 match to Philadelphia in the finals at LaMoy Field on Saturday.
It was the first championship game appearance for the Eagles, who finished their greatest season in program history with a 12-5-1 record.
"Credit to Philly U for both a great regular season and tournament. It isn't easy to win both titles. I couldn't be prouder of the girls. We were a little shorthanded today injury-wise, but the girls never quit and gained some valuable experience. Now we'll wait to see if we get an invitation to one of the postseason tournaments," said head coach
Matt Micros .
Philadelphia got on the board in the 21st minute as Patrice Maro took a cross from Michaela Van Antwerp and put it past junior
Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) who came out of the net.
The Rams would score again in the 41st minute when Taylor Mysza took a rebound from a shot from Carla Chmielewski and put it past Morgan to make it 2-0 going into the half.
The second half was quiet up until the final seconds, asÂ
Chmielewski scored with 38 seconds left on a pass from Van Antwerp for the final score of the game.
Morgan finished the day with two saves for the Eagles. In the second half, she was replaced by junior
Brittany Carroll (Plainville, Conn.), who finished with one save.
The Rams defense held the Eagles two just two shots on goal. It was the 14th shutout for the Rams this season, who allowed just two goals in CACC play this season.
The title for the Rams was their second in school history and first since 2006.
Three Eagles made the All-Tournament team. They were junior Lexxi Carroll (Plainville, Conn.), freshman Sam Rodriguez (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman Misty Kaiwi (Waipahu, Hawaii). Post will graduate six seniors who helped take the program to new levels, but coach Micros is excited about the future. "Obviously, we will miss our seniors," Micros said. "They were here when the program was struggling and they help build it to where it is now. But we are excited as well, because we return a talented group of players and are lining up a good incoming class. The future looks bright."All-Tournament Team MVP: Hannah Palese (PhilaU)Jenna Richards (Holy Family) Natalie Migoya (Caldwell)
