Strong Second Half Leads Post Over Concordia 81-65

Eagles Pick Up First Victory of the Season



BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman Matt Mareno (San Francisco, Calif.) scored 16 of his team-high 28 points in the second half as the Post University men's basketball team came from behind to defeat Concordia 81-65 in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener Wednesday night.
 
Mareno was one of four Eagles in double figures and also grabbed 14 rebounds. Freshman Joseph Lockwood (London, England) added 14 points and five boards. Junior David Seymour (Amityville, N.Y.) had 13 points and nine rebounds.
 
Post struggled to score out of the gate as it made just two of its first 10 shots and Concordia built its largest lead of the game at 20-7 with 13:39 left in half. Jalen Heath and Tshyrad Oates led the Clippers with five points each to start the game.
 
Lockwood completed a three-point play a 10-0 run by the Eagles capped by a three-pointer by senior Nardie Bogues (Baltimore, Md.) to cut the deficit to just one at 26-25 with 7:13 remaining in the first. Heath put Concordia back in front by double-digits with two threes as part of an 11-2 run. He finished with 17 points in the half as the Clippers led 45-39 at the break.
 
The Eagles took control in the second half. After Concordia scored the first two baskets to pull ahead by 10, Mareno and Lockwood combined to score the next 12 points as Post took its first lead at 51-50.
 
With the score tied 54-54 with 12:07 left, the Eagles began to run away as they forced turnovers and scored on two straight possessions and never trailed again. Post outscored the Clippers 18-4 on turnovers in the second half, forcing nine in the period. The Eagles closed the game out on a 20-7 run over the final 9:47 and led by as many as 17 points.
 
Post outrebounded the Clippers 48-35 and held a 21-12 advantage offensively, which led to 17 second-chance points.
 
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22 as they visit Dominican. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
