Eagles Defeat Georgian Court in Thrilling Comeback

Post Routs Georgian Court 3-2

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team picked up a well-deserved victory over Georgian Court University in comeback fashion. Down 0-2 in the match, the Eagles won three consecutive sets to earn their fourth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 4. The set scores were: 23-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18, 15-7.

The dynamic duo, sophomore Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.) and senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.), combined for 24 kills on the match. German tallied 14 kills and added a block, as Wilman recorded yet another double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Junior Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) was able to land eight kills and sophomore Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) was a force above the net totaling five blocks against the opposition. Senior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) quarterbacked the Eagle attack with 39 assists and junior libero Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) absorbed the pressure with 13 digs on the day.

From the start, Post found its rhythm offensively to string together a series of runs to climb out to a 20-14 advantage. At this point, the Lion offense came together to mount a comeback recording seven consecutive points, resulting from Eagle attack errors and service aces, to take the first set 25-23. Neither team in the second set could manage to build a cushion better than three points. The action was highlighted by timely kills that shifted the momentum of play; however, Georgian Court came away on top to edge the Eagles in a 25-22 set victory.

The Eagles stepped out on the court for the third set with urgency and a renewed energy. The Eagles set the tone with an early 6-0 run and an outstanding serving sequence by Hailey Griffin. Post climbed to a comfortable 20-6 lead and cruised to a 25-13 set victory. The fourth set played out similar to the second as both teams scored in bursts of two and three, but this time it was Post that would land the five point run which proved to be the difference maker. Post would go on to even the sets 2-2.

The Eagle fans got behind their team in the fifth and final set and did not leave disappointed. Post came out on fire and went on a 7-1 run and later a 7-2 run to take a 14-7 lead. On a Lion service error, the Eagles won the set 15-7 and completed the comeback to win the match 3-2.

Post improves to 4-2 in conference play and is tied for third place in the CACC standings. The Eagles are 8-7 overall on the season. Georgian Court stands at 3-3 in the CACC, and 7-10 thus far on the season.

The Eagles continue conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 8 as the Eagles travel to Rutherford, N.J. to take on the Golden Falcons of Felician College. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
