Eagles Take Down Top-Seeded Caldwell

Post Defeats Caldwell 3-1

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Post University women's volleyball team defeated Caldwell University on Wednesday, Oct. 29 in their second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match of the season against the Cougars. Falling behind 0-1 in the opening set, the Eagles came back to win the next three to earn a 3-1 victory. The set scores were 23-25, 25-14, 26-24, and 25-18. With four remaining conference matches left in the regular season, this win marks the first time in nine years that the Eagles have reached 10 CACC wins. The program recorded 14 conference wins in the 2005 season.

Sophomore Nichole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) was responsible for most of the damage done with a season high 14 kills on the night. Sophomore Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.) followed right behind landing 13 kills and senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) finished with 10. Sophomore Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) made an impact as well scoring nine kills. Both German and Wilman recorded their usual double-double (kills-digs), as five Eagles tallied double digit digs in an impressive defensive showing- junior Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) came up with 18. Senior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) orchestrated the Eagle attack with 44 assists leading the Eagles past the conference-leading opponent.

Post came out swinging in the opening set jumping out to an early 7-3 lead. The two squads, showing why they rank in the top of the conference standings, battled back-and-forth to keep the set close. Post held the slight one-point advantage 21-20, but Caldwell found a way to get it done down the stretch to edge the Eagles 25-23 in the first set.

Again, Post started hot in the second set taking a 9-3 lead, leaving the first set behind them. This time the Cougars were not able to match the offensive tempo displayed by the Eagles. Just when Caldwell brought it back within striking distance, Post responded with a 10-3 run to run away with the second set 25-14.

The following set featured seven lead changes, as both teams knew the importance of wining the third set. In the early goings, Post managed a 6-1 run, but it was directly answered by a 6-0 Cougar run. Trailing 20-17, Post mounted a comeback to even the score at 24-24. Taking advantage of a service error and a timely kill by Slyaktina, the Eagles claimed the third set 26-24.

The Eagles flexed their muscles and were determined in the fourth set. Post strung together an 8-2 run to give them a five-point cushion and never looked back. The Eagles wouldn't go away and both teams fought hard until the end. With another set-ending kill for Slyaktina, the Eagles left Caldwell with another CACC win.

Post stands in second place in the North Division with a 10-5 record in CACC play, and 15-10 overall. Caldwell still remains in the top spot in the North Division at 11-4 in conference play and 17-9 thus far on the season.

The Eagles are back in action on Thursday, Oct. 30 when they host the Bears of Bloomfield College at the Drubner Center for their second meeting of the season in another CACC showdown. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
