Eagles Earn Big CACC Victory Over Wilmington, 3-1

Martins Scores Twice For Second Straight Game

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's soccer team scored three times in the second half on Friday to defeat Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Wilmington 3-1 at home. The Eagles have won two straight and improve to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

"We were confident we would be able to get at least a goal as long as we had quality in the attacking third. Today awas a great result against a very good opponent and it gives our guys confidence moving forward. We're starting to get our rhythym. We know we can play with the best teams in the country it's all about how much quality we have on that day" said head coach Ted Haley.

The Wildcats struck first in the fifth minute as Jordan Ellison found Lance Berry in front of the net on a set piece to put Wilmington ahead 1-0. The Eagles had five shots in the first half with their best attempt coming in the 22nd minute as junior Tiago Martins (Porto, Portugal) had a close shot that was tipped away by Wildcat keeper Zach Lee.

Post got on the board in the 60th minute as Martins booted home a penalty kick to tie the game 1-1. From there momentum swung the Eagles way as Post held Wilmington without a shot attempt for the next 15 minutes.

"Tiago was outstanding today. He's really starting to understand and get a good feel for our system," added Haley.

In the 76th minute, Martins received a pass on the right sideline and dribbled past a defender to score his second of the game and put Post in front 2-1. Wilmington nearly tied it in the 80th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Jon Hanlon (Centereach, N.Y.) made an impressive diving save on a shot by Berry.

On the ensuing corner kick, the Eagles gained possession and junior Raphael Moura (Danbury, Conn.) beat his defender and added an insurance goal to make the score 3-1.

Shots were even for both teams at 12-12 on the day and so were shots on goal at 7-7. Hanlon finished with six saves and picked up his third victory in net.

The Eagles hit the road on Wednesday, Oct. 8 against Felician. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
