History
Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University Eagles women's soccer team took its already potent offense to another level as it defeated Bloomfield, 8-2 in its regular season finale thanks to a hat trick by senior
Renel Dennis (Queens, N.Y.).
The Eagles finished the regular season at 10-4-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. They will be the No. 2 seed - but they were picked to finish 11th - in the CACC tournament.Â
The scoring, as it usually does, started early for the Eagles as Dennis took a deflection off of goalkeeper Diana Vincentini and put it in the net for her 14th goal of the season in the 10th minute. Junior
Lexxi Carroll (Plainville, Conn.) was credited with the assist.
The Bears (1-17-0, 1-12-0 CACC) would score immediately after, in the 11th minute, as Christina Vicentini scored on the free kick, tying the game at 1-1.
Fellow senior
Tessa Dunster (Stamford, Conn.) would assist on the next goal for Dennis in the 14th minute as she put it past the right side of the keeper for her 15th goal of the season. Three minutes later Dennis scored her 16th and final goal of the season as she took a pass from sophomore
Valerie Moore and blasted it past Vincentini.
Dennis will finish the season as the CACC's scoring champion; the second straight year a player from Post won the scoring title. She also graduates Post as the leading goal-scorer since the Eagles joined Division II, with 38 goals so far.
Dunster - last season's CACC scoring champ - scored her second goal of the season edging it past the keeper's left side in the 18th minute. Freshman
Sam Rodriguez (Wayne, N.J.) was credited with the assist.
Post took a break from its scoring barrage for 17 minutes before sophomore
Sylvia Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) scored on a deflection off of the left post off a shot from freshman
Angela Ciaramella (Hamden, Conn.). It was the third goal of the season for Yanez. Post would go into the half up 5-1.
The Eagles wasted little time in the second half getting on the board again as Rodriguez took a pass from freshman
Katharina Mertz (Buxtehude, Germany) and scored her fourth goal of the season in the 48th minute.
Yanez would get on the board again in 52nd minute, taking a rebound off of a deflection and putting the ball past Vincentini. Senior
Alison Mrowinski got the assist.
The Mertz-Rodriguez freshman connection would make one more bit of noise for Post as Rodriguez took a header off of a corner from Mertz for the Eagles eighth and final goal of the game in the 74th minute.
Christina Vicentini would score her second goal of the game in the 78th minute for the final goal of the match.
Junior goalkeeper
Laura Morgan (Brush Prairie, Wash.) finished with four saves for the Eagles.
Despite injuries in recent week, coach
Matt Micros is proud of how the Eagles kept their focus.
"We have battled through a host of injuries the last few weeks, but the girls have stayed the course and other players have stepped up," Micros said. To finish second in the conference after being picked 11th preseason is a testament to the girls hard work and determination. We will enjoy this for a night and then focus on the playoffs and put forth our best effort."
Up next for the Eagles is the first round of the CACC tournament on Nov. 3, which they will host.Â
The final day of the regular season plays out over the next two days to determine Post's opponent for the first round. The Eagles will play the winner of the Goldey-Beacom/Dominican game. Should that game end in a tie, Post will host Wilmington.
