Post Falls to Wilmington in CACC Showdown

Post Suffers Loss to Wilmington 1-3

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Post University women's volleyball team suffered its fifth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss of the season to the Wildcats of Wilmington University 1-3 on Saturday, Oct. 25. The set scores were: 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, and 19-25.

Sophomore Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.) landed 10 kills and came up with 11 digs in four sets against Wilmington. Senior Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) and sophomore Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) were both active offensively finishing with nine kills apiece. Griffin also added an impressive 20 digs and the junior libero Janiellee Alvarez contributed with 16. It was a relatively slow afternoon offensively for the Eagles; however they put up a valiant effort defensively with 19 total blocks against the Wilmington high-powered offense, six for German and five for sophomore Nichole Brown (Queens, N.Y.). Senior Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) piloted the Eagle attack with 37 assists and was effective from the service line with three aces.

The Wildcats came out in a tear on their home court with a steady dose of kills from their outside hitters. The Eagles fell behind early on and trailed the entire set. Post managed to cut the deficit to four points and looked poised for the comeback with a 7-2 run late in the set, but Wilmington found a way to finish strong 25-20 and take a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles played lights-out volleyball in the first third and the last third of the second set. Post found their rhythm early and rattled off an 8-2 run. The Wildcats were able to play their way back into the set and even the score at 15-15. This is when the Eagles took over and scored points in bundles of 3-2-3-2 with single Wildcat points breaking up the run. Post won the second set by a score of 25-18 and evened the set series at 1-1.

The third set was back-and-forth action, featuring seven lead changes as both teams traded two-point runs from the start. With exciting defensive play from both sides, neither team landed a point streak to gain a comfortable advantage. The set was knotted up 22-22 and the Wildcats scored three consecutive points to take the third set 25-22. This set proved to be the edge the Wildcats needed going into the fourth set.

Again, the fourth set remained balanced down the stretch as Wilmington went on a five-point run and Post answered with an equal run of their own. The Wildcats held the one-point advantage 20-19 and closed the door landing the final five points in a row to win the set 25-19.
Post stands in third place in the North Division with a 9-5 record in CACC play, and 14-10 overall. Wilmington improves to 11-3 in conference play and 15-12 thus far on the season.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 29 when they travel to Caldwell, N.J. to take on the Cougars of Caldwell University for their second meeting of the season in a CACC showdown. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
