PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Behind a season-high 254 passing yards by sophomore Greg Volpe (West Haven, Conn.) and 142 rushing yards by freshman Joe Lynch (Wolcott, Conn.) the Post University sprint football team picked up a road victory Friday night 28-21 over Penn. The Eagles improve to 2-2 on the season.

"Joe showed why we have been on him since his junior year of high school. He is a shifty runner who doesn't usually go down on first contact and is learning how to get his shoulders square get more yards with each rep," said head coach Michael Mannetti.

After Penn scored a touchdown with a minute left in the first quarter, the Eagles needed just two plays to tie the game 7-7. Volpe hit junior Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) for an 81-yard touchdown pass. Mahan finished with four catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior T.J. Piland (Waterbury, Conn.) picked off Penn quarterback Mike McCurdy on the ensuing possession. Post made the most of the turnover, scoring a touchdown on a six-yard rush by Lynch. The score was setup by another long pass, this time Volpe found sophomore Rocco Guerrera (Watertown, Conn.) for 44 yards on third and 17.

Piland came up big again on the kickoff, recovering a fumble forced by senior Leslie Morgan (Copaigue, N.Y.). The Eagles drive stalled and they were forced to punt but forced a three-and-out by the Quakers to regain possession.

With just over a minute left in the first half, the Eagles had the ball on the Penn 30 yard line on fourth and seven. Post decided not to punt and Volpe found Mahan once again for a touchdown to put the Eagles in front 21-7 at the break.

"We executed our plan perfectly and didn't have any set-backs. When we do that we are pretty good on offense, especially in the four-minute type offense where we can get our athletes in space. They were playing man so we ran a simple clear out and got Jay'Len out in space and he did the rest," added Mannetti.

Senior Vincent Dellefave (Montville, N.J.) intercepted the first Quaker pass of the second half. Post gave the ball right back on a fumble. Midway through the third, Penn put together a nine-play 71-yard drive to cut the deficit to 21-14.

Post slowed the game down with a 12-play drive that took over seven minutes. Lynch was a workhorse on the drive, rushing nine times for 54 yards, including a one-yard touchdown score to put the Eagles in front 28-14 early in the fourth.

"We challenged our offensive line and they responding by opening holes so Joe could do his thing. The line became better as we gave him more carries," said Mannetti.

After a big kickoff return by the Quakers that set them up in Eagles' territory, Dellefave came up with his second pick of the night. Post was unable to take advantage and punted. On the Eagles' next possession, they botched a punt and Penn took over in good field position.

McCurdy hit Andrew Sutton four plays later for a touchdown from to pull Penn within a score at 28-21. Post was forced to punt with 1:54 remaining. Sophomore Chris Leggio (Brewster, N.Y.) forced a fumble and recovered in Penn territory with just over a minute left to secure the win.

The five forced turnovers were the most by Post this season. The Eagles finished the game with 399 offensive yards. The Post defense held the CSFL's second-leading rusher Mike Beamish to -2 yards on seven carries.

Post is back in action next Friday night Oct. 24 as it visits Cornell. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
