WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team suffers its second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) loss of the season to Dominican College on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in a marathon match that lasted five sets. The set scores were: 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 22-25, 15-17.
Â
Three different Eagles recorded double digit kills tonight in a valiant effort in hopes to hand the Chargers their first loss of the season. Sophomore
Skylar German (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded yet another impressive stat line leading the Eagles with 17 kills and five blocks on the night. Senior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) finished with a double-double, 15 kills with 15 digs as junior outside hitter
Hailey Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) contributed to the scoreboard with 14 kills. Senior
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) prepared attack after attack tallying 53 assists and junior libero
Janiellee Alvarez (Norwich, Conn.) handled much of the defensive responsibility with 22 digs.
Â
Sophomore McKenzie John (Lafayette, La.), who leads the CACC in kills per set (5.50) proved to be relentless above the net getting 26 kills to fall for the Chargers.
Â
Dominican showed up to play from the first serve of the match building an early 10-5 lead. After a Post timeout and a couple inspiring words from Coach Brienza, the Eagles went on a 13-2 run, something of a statement proving they could play with the top-seeded Chargers. With back-to-back kills from German and Wilman, Post won the first set 25-16. In the second, Post managed to play to a 20-16 lead over Dominican as both squads landed timely kills not to allow either team to build a comfortable lead. With the set point looming in favor of Post, the Chargers were able to score four consecutive points capped with a final block to claim the second set 26-24 in a win-by-two scenario.
Â
The third set played out similar to the first, as Dominican held a 16-11 lead midway through the set. Once again, a timeout looked to be all Post needed to change the momentum as they graciously outscored their opponent 14-2 in the later stages of the set to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. There were five lead changes in the fourth set and the Chargers were playing to stay alive scoring points in bundles to climb to a 24-18 lead. The Eagles found themselves right back in the thick of things with a four-point run but a final Charger kill by Senior Kayla Dexter (Selah, Wash.) would even the match at 2-2.
Â
The energy was electric at the Drubner Center in the fifth and final set of the match. Both teams battled right down to the wire trading points and coaches using subs with a strategy in mind. Locked in a tie, even at 15-15, the Charger attack simply found a chink the Eagle armor to land two points and win the set 17-15.
Â
As September comes to a close, Post stands at 2-2 in conference play, and 6-7 overall. Dominican will remain unbeaten at 5-0 in the CACC standings, and 8-0 thus far on the season.
Â
The Eagles continue conference play on Friday, Oct. 3 as the Eagles travel to Bronxville, N.Y. to take on the Clippers of Concordia College. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
