ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Post University men's basketball team was defeated by Southern Connecticut, 90-73, in the first game of the 8th Annual James Clancy Memorial Tournament hosted by Dominican on Friday night. Senior Stephen Perry Jr. (Westhampton, N.J.) led the Eagles with a season-high 18 points.

Perry was 4-for-8 from behind the arc on the night and added three boards and three assists. Senior Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) added 14 points and four assists. Senior Josh Tatum (Greenville, N.C.) was 5-for-8 from the field for 14 points and had six rebounds.

Both teams struggled to score early and Southern Connecticut held an early 14-8 lead with 12:28 remaining in the first half. Tatum scored four of Post's first eight points. The Owls opened up their largest lead of the half at 18-11 after a second-chance jumper by Deshawn Murphy.

The Eagles slowly chipped away at the lead and a three-pointer by Perry with 4:29 left gave Post a 31-30 advantage.

With the score knotted at 32 apiece, Post staged a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 39-32 with just under two minutes left in period. Senior Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scored five of his 10 points during the run. The Eagles held a 43-38 lead at the break.

Southern Connecticut tied the game 45-45 with a 7-2 run to begin the second half. Post quickly answered with a 9-2 stretch of its own to build back a seven-point advantage with 14:19 left. Perry capped off the run with a jumper of a dish from Strong.

The Owls closed the gap and took a 60-58 lead with a run of their own. Strong hit from behind the arc on the Eagles' next possession to give Post a one-point advantage with 10:52 remaining, but it would be their last lead of the game. Southern Connecticut shot 10-for-13 over the final minutes to pull away.

The Eagles had one of their best efforts on the glass this season with 35 boards and were only outrebounded by one, the smallest margin in a loss this year. The Owls dominated the paint, outscoring Post, 52-20.

Post plays its second game of the tournament tomorrow against Bentley at 4 p.m. The Falcons defeated host Dominican, 76-57, in tonight's late game.
