Eagles Excel at Free-throw Line, Notch Second Win of Season

Box Score

NEW CASTLE, Del. – Senior Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) scored 24 points and recorded a season-high six steals to lead Post men's basketball to a 77-68 victory over CACC opponent Wilmington Saturday afternoon. Fellow senior Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added 19 points and was 5-for-6 from behind the arc for the Eagles.

After Krischer nailed a three-pointer with 11:54 remaining in the second half, Post took a 41-38 lead and never looked back. The Eagles led by as much as 14 points and made their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.

Senior Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) notched eight points including a pair of three-pointers to go along with three assists. Overall, the Eagles were 10-for-17 from three-point territory.

The difference for the Eagles in this one was free throws. Post went 19-for-23 from the line, an area in which the team has severely struggled with early on in the season. Senior Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) made all six of his foul shots and ended up with nine points.

Post held a 28-22 lead at the half, but Wilmington stormed right back after the break, and a jumper by Herbert Dennis tied the game up at 28 apiece. The Eagles then used a 10-4 run to get back on top after a free throw from Strong.

The Wildcats kept on fighting and evened the score at 38 all after a layup by Shaq Monroe-Gaskins. Then Krischer and Strong took over and scored the next 11 points of the game to put the Eagles up 49-38 with 9:56 remaining.

Wilmington never got any closer than seven points behind Post after that. The Eagles were perfect from the line in the final minute of the game converting all 14 attempts to seal the deal.

Dennis reached 1,000 points for his career at Wilmington in the game. It was the third straight loss for the Wildcats.

Post (2-5, 2-2 CACC) continues its month-long road trip with a matchup at Bloomfield next on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 8 p.m.
