PREVIEW: Eagles Look For Second-Straight Victory On Wednesday At Bloomfield

WATERBURY, Conn.  – The Post University men's basketball team continues its six-game road trip on Wednesday night against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) for Bloomfield. The Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak its last time out against Wilmington on Dec. 7. Bloomfield has won its last two games.

Senior Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) scored 24 points and recorded a season-high six steals to lead Post men's basketball to a 77-68 victory over CACC opponent Wilmington Saturday afternoon. Fellow senior Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added 19 points and was 5-for-6 from behind the arc for the Eagles. After Krischer nailed a three-pointer with 11:54 remaining in the second half, Post took a 41-38 lead and never looked back. The Eagles led by as much as 14 points and made their free throws down the stretch to close out the game.

Senior Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) notched eight points including a pair of three-pointers to go along with three assists. Overall, the Eagles were 10-for-17 from three-point territory. The difference for the Eagles in this one was free throws. Post went 19-for-23 from the line, an area in which the team has severely struggled with early on in the season. Senior Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) made all six of his foul shots and ended up with nine points.

Post held a 28-22 lead at the half, but Wilmington stormed right back after the break, and a jumper by Herbert Dennis tied the game up at 28 apiece. The Eagles then used a 10-4 run to get back on top after a free throw from Strong.
 
Scouting the Deacons
Bloomfield is 4-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference on the year and sits in the second place in the CACC North Division. The Deacons have won their last two games, most recently a 79-76 overtime victory over Chestnut Hill. Four players are averaging double figures in scoring led by Marvin Williams at 15.8 points per game. Kevin Udo is third in the CACC at 8.8 rebounds per game. Bloomfield is near the top of the CACC in many categories and leads the conference in rebounding at 42.4 per game and are second in points per game at 81.0.
 
All-Time Series Against Bloomfield
Post is 8-15 all-time against the Deacons and has lost the last four meetings between the two teams. The Eagles have not defeated Bloomfield on the road since 2008.

Eagles Among CACC Leaders
Derrick Strong is sixth in the conference with 18.0 points per game and eighth in three-point percentage at 46.4. Effrin Ellison leads the CACC and is 12th in the nation with a 56.7 shooting percentage from behind the arc. Strong and Harris are the top two in the CACC in steals per game at 2.7 and 2.6 respectively. The Eagles lead the conference in three-pointers made (9.6) and steals per game (9.7).
 
Coming Up Short
Post is off to a 2-5 start, but four of the five losses came by a combined 14 points. In two of the games, the Eagles had a last-second chance for victory. Against Bridgeport, Post had possession with 0:04 left in an 87-85 defeat. Last time out against LIU-Post, the Eagles had two chances in the final three seconds before falling 67-66. Post hit two late shots against Nyack to send the game into two overtimes, but came up short 106-101.
 
Honored For Defensive Prowess
Derrick Strong was named CACC Defensive Player of the week on Dec. 9. The senior had a career-high six steals in Post's victory over Wilmington. He is the second Eagle to receive the honor this season after AJ Harris on Nov. 11. In his Eagles debut against Southern New Hampshire on Nov. 9, Harris recorded seven steals, which was the highest single-game total since the 2006-07 season.

Post continues its road trip on Friday, Dec. 20 with a trip to American International at 7 p.m.
