MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Post University men's basketball team fell in its season-opener on Saturday night at Southern New Hampshire, 89-72. Seniors
Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) and
Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) paced Post with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
Krischer capped off an 8-0 Eagles' run early in the first half with a three-pointer to give Post an 8-4 lead. The Eagles extended their lead to 15-9 at the 14:02 mark of the period; it would be their largest lead of the game.
Southern New Hampshire answered with a 16-5 run to take a 25-20 lead. Elijah Bonsignore scored five points during the stretch. Three-pointers by seniors
Effrin Ellison (Waterbury, Conn.) and
Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) helped Post grab a 28-27 advantage with 6:26 remaining in the half.
With the scored tied 32-32 with 3:24 left in the first, the Penmen went on a 12-2 run to pull ahead by 10. Ellison made his second from distance to close the deficit to 44-37 at the break.
Post was never able to pull any closer than seven in the second half. After falling behind 52-40, senior
Stephen Perry Jr. (Westhampton, N.J.) hit his first of three three-pointers in the second half to cut the Penmen lead to 54-47 with 12:54 remaining. Perry finished with nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from behind the arc.
The Eagles made nine from distance on the night, but shot just 34.8% overall. The Post reserves outscored Southern New Hampshire 32-12, led by Perry's nine points. Ellison and senior
Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) each had eight points off the bench. The Eagles held a 13-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Post opens its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 13 on the road against Concordia. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
