WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University women's volleyball team lost in heartbreaking fashion to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Philadelphia 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center. The set scores were 25-20, 15-25, 29-27, 25-27, 13-15. The Eagles had multiple chances to put the match away but fell just short. Junior
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) recorded a season-high 48 assists, a career-high 20 digs and five kills for Post.
Freshmen
Kerrin Kallmann (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and
Nicole Brown (Queens, N.Y.) combined for 27 kills and six service aces. Senior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) added 13 kills and 18 digs for the Eagles.
Post held the lead for the majority of the opening set and took an 8-6 lead early. Kills by Kallmann and Slyaktina helped the Eagles to jump on top 11-7 before Philadelphia pulled within two at 12-10. The Eagles then went on an impressive 7-1 run to take their largest lead of the match (eight) at 19-11. The Rams made things interesting, going on a 9-3 run to make it 23-20, but Post closed it out 25-20.
The Eagles held the upper hand early again in the second set, taking a commanding 8-4 lead. However, the Rams fought back and used an 11-3 run to take a two point lead, forcing a Post timeout. With the lead still at two for Philadelphia, the Rams scored eight straight points and finished the set on a 10-2 run.
Yet again, Post took command early, scoring the first four points of the third set and holding that four point cushion at 8-4. The Rams worked their way back in it with the score 15-14, but the Eagles scored four straight points behind two aces from Brown, forcing a Philadelphia timeout with the score at 19-14. The Rams kept fighting and tied the match at 26, but a Wilman kill helped Post to close out a 29-27 win.
Philadelphia jumped out in front to open the fourth set, taking the first four points. Two Kallmann aces helped Post to regain the lead at 6-5, and the two teams would battle back and forth for the remainder of the set. Down 20-18, the Eagles went on a 5-2 run to regain the lead 23-22 and forced a timeout by the Rams. Kills by Brown and Kallmann gave Post match point at 25-24, but the Eagles couldn't close it out and lost the set 27-25.
After falling behind 6-3 in the final set, Post scored five straight points to take an 8-6 lead. A service ace by freshman
Morgan Griffin (Plainfield, Conn.) gave the Eagles an 11-8 lead, but then the Rams took over. Philadelphia ended the match on a 7-2 run to win its 10th match of the season.
Griffin did a little bit of everything, recording a career-high 19 digs, nine kills, three assists, three block assists and a service ace. Talk about coming up just short, the Eagles have lost by only two points in seven of their last nine losing sets.
Brittany Olson recorded an astonishing 20 kills to go along with 13 digs for the Rams. Philadelphia improved to 9-2 in the conference following the victory.
The next match for the Eagles is at Caldwell on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
