PREVIEW: Eagles Host Penn In Final Home Game

Ten Seniors Will Be Honored In Pre-Game Ceremony

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University sprint football team closes out its home schedule on Saturday, Oct. 17 as it welcomes Penn to LaMoy Field for a noon kickoff. Both teams are coming off losses their last time out. Prior to the game the Eagles' ten seniors will be honored in a short ceremony
 
Last Time Out: Navy 42, Post 27 – Box Score | Recap | Video Highlights
Sophomore Anthony Jamele (Terryville, Conn.) broke the Post University sprint football single-season sack record with his eighth sack, but the Eagles fell 42-27 at home to Navy on Oct. 12. Jamele recorded 1.5 sacks to surpass senior captain Chris Lopez's (Waterbury, Conn.) record of 7.5 sacks set last season. Lopez led the Eagles with 6.5 tackles including 4.5 for loss on the afternoon. Sophomore James Harrington (Danbury, Conn.) had 142 total yards and two touchdowns and became the career leader in rushing touchdowns with his sixth.
 
After punting on their first six possessions, the Eagles got on the board with an 11-yard run by Harrington to cap off a nine play, 82-yard drive with 5:07 remaining in the half. Harrington had 60 of his 78 total rushing yards on the drive. After another Navy touchdown to begin the fourth, Coggins caught a 32-yard pass in the corner of the end zone to pull the Eagles within a score at 28-20 with 10:37 remaining. Junior Jashua Guadalupe (New Britain, Conn.) made a stop on fourth-and-3 to give the Eagles the ball back on their own 46 yard line. Freshman Javon Martin (Waterbury, Conn.) found Harrington for a 64-yard touchdown with 43 second left. Post was unable to recover the onside kick.
 
Scouting the Quakers
Penn comes into the weekend at a record of 2-2 and had won its last two games before falling in overtime to Franklin Pierce last week. The Quakers boast the top offense in the CSFL as they average 421.8 yards per game. Penn gets 264.2 yards per game through the air, which also leads the league. Qurterback Mike McCurdy is second in the CSFL with 756 passing yards and eight touchdowns. Defensively, Stu Helgeson averages 9.5 tackles per game and is second in the conference with 38 stops.
 
All-Time Series
Post picked up its first-ever win against the Quakers last season and is 1-2 all-time against Penn. This is the first meeting between the two in Waterbury.

In The League Rankings – Conference Statistics
The Eagles currently rank third in the CSFL in total defense, allowing just 292.8 yards per game. Post is also second rushing defense with 60.6 yards allowed per game. Harrington leads the conference with 585 rushing yards and a 6.6 yards per rush average. Harrington and sophomore Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) are second and third, respectively, in the CSFL in all-purpose yards. Volpe is third in passing yards per game (180.7) and passing efficiency (166.0). Jamele is second in the CSFL with 8.0 sacks on the year and the Eagles are second with 18 total sacks. Chance is tied for first with two fumbles recovered.
 
Conference Accolades
Michael Romingo was selected as Special Teams Player of Week after the Eagles' victory over Princeton. Romingo recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown. Post had two players honored by the CSFL after its week one victory. Harrington was selected as Player of the Week after his 156 yards, two touchdown performance. Mahan had 147 kickoff return yards, including a 91-yard return for a touchdown and was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week. It was the third time Mahan was honored as a player of the week after accomplishing the feat twice last season. It was also the first time two Eagles were selected as player of the week in the same week in program history.

Writing The Record Books
James Harrington has had games of 170 and 156 rushing yards this season, the two highest single-game totals is school history. The record of 170 came this past week at Mansfield. He also holds the single-season rushing record with 585 yards this year and is the career leader with six rushing touchdowns. Anthony Jamele had four sacks against Cornell to break the single-game record of two which was achieved four other times, most recently by Chris Lopez last season against Franklin Pierce. Jamele holds the single-season record with 8.0 sacks this year.
 
Senior Rashaun Reid (Derby, Conn.) will look to become the second player in school history to amass 1,000 receiving yards for their career. He currently sits with 873 yards, 127 away from the milestone. Daniel Awwad is the all-time leader in receiving yards with 1175 for his career. Awwad also sits on top with 64 career receptions, while Reid is second with 57 receptions. Senior Chris Lopez (Waterbury, Conn.) sits at with 105.5 career tackles, 14.5 behind Kyle Lagasse's school record of 120.0. David Boyle is tied with Lagasse atop the career interceptions list with four.
 
Homeward Bound
The 2013 season marks the first time Post will be playing a full home schedule at LaMoy Field. The Eagles have had just two home games in the previous three years and played every game on the road last season. Post is 3-2 all-time at home. Both previous contests were played at Municipal Stadium.

All-CSFL Honorees
Post shattered its school record as 23 student-athletes were named to the All-Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Team last season. Four received first team honors, including returning seniors Daniel Awwad (Waterbury, Conn.), Chris Masayda (Watertown, Conn.) and David Boyle (Waterbury, Conn.). A total of 13 All-CSFL honorees return from a year ago.
 
Leading The Way
Head coach Michael Mannetti named seniors Christopher Lopez, David Boyle, Matt Murphy, and Chris Masayda team captains for 2013. All four have been a part of the team since its inaugural season in 2010. Boyle and Masayda were both named First Team All-CSFL a year ago. Lopez led the Eagles with 7.5 sacks. Murphy played in five games and made five tackles.

The Road Ahead
Post closes out the season on Saturday, Oct. 26 at Franklin Pierce. The two will be playing for the CSFL Talon Cup, which the Eagles currently hold via their 29-21 victory last season. Kickoff is set for noon.
