Jamele Breaks Single-Season Sack Record In Eagles’ 42-27 Defeat

Anthony Jamele Recorded 1.5 Sacks, Now Has 8.0 On The Season

WATERBURY, Conn. – Sophomore Anthony Jamele (Terryville, Conn.) broke the Post University sprint football single-season sack record with his eighth sack, but the Eagles fell 42-27 at home to Navy on Saturday afternoon. Post falls to 3-2 on the year as Navy improves to 4-0.
 
Jamele recorded 1.5 sacks to surpass senior captain Chris Lopez's (Waterbury, Conn.) record of 7.5 sacks set last season. Lopez led the Eagles with 6.5 tackles including 4.5 for loss on the afternoon.
 
Sophomore James Harrington (Danbury, Conn.) had 142 total yards and two touchdowns and became the career leader in rushing touchdowns with his sixth. Sophomore Greg Volpe (North Haven, Conn.) was 11-28 through the air with 164 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.  Freshman David Coggins had four receptions for 61 yards and a score.
 
Post fell behind 14-0 early as Midshipmen quarterback William Hampton found Michael Buck for a 78-yard touchdown midway through the first. David Williams ran also one in from a yard out with 18 seconds left in the opening quarter.
 
After punting on their first six possessions, the Eagles got on the board with an 11-yard run by Harrington to cap off a nine play, 82-yard drive with 5:07 remaining in the half. Harrington had 60 of his 78 total rushing yards on the drive.
 
Hampton threw his second touchdown pass of the day to put Navy in front 21-7 early in the third quarter as he found Warren Rooney for a 35-yard score. Sophomore Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) returned the ensuing kickoff 37 yards and later caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Volpe to cut the deficit to 21-14.
 
Freshman Bernard Peterson (Pasadena, Md.) intercepted a pass on the next Midshipmen possession, but the Eagles were forced to punt. A fumble by Coggins in Navy territory after an 11-yard catch ended Post's final possession of the third quarter.
 
After another Navy touchdown to begin the fourth, Coggins caught a 32-yard pass in the corner of the end zone to pull the Eagles within a score at 28-20 with 10:37 remaining. Junior Jashua Guadalupe (New Britain, Conn.) made a stop on fourth-and-3 to give the Eagles the ball back on their own 46 yard line.
 
Volpe threw his first interception of the year on the first play of the ensuing possession and Brady Flies returned it 52 yards deep into Post territory. Navy scored on a 10-yard rush by Eric Wellmon to extend its lead to 35-20 with 6:34 left.
 
A 71-yard shovel pass for a touchdown from Volpe to Harrington was called back after a holding penalty and the Eagles possession ended on a failed fake punt. The Midshipmen added other score and led 42-20 later.
 
Freshman Javon Martin (Waterbury, Conn.) found Harrington for a 64-yard touchdown with 43 second left. Post was unable to recover the onside kick.
 
Post held a 228-167 advantage in passing yards, but Navy outrushed the Eagles 174-84. The Eagles were just 2-for-14 on third-down conversions. Corey Garcia led the Midshipmen with 131 yards on the ground.
 
The Eagles play at home for the final time this season next Saturday, Oct. 19 against Penn. Kickoff is set for noon.
