PREVIEW: Post Seeks Third Consecutive Win At Concordia Tuesday Night

Eagles Can Notch Third Consecutive Sweep Of Divisional Foe In Bronxville

The Post University men's basketball team will aim for its third straight win on Tuesday night when it travels to Bronxville, N.Y., for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest against Concordia. The Eagles will go for their 12th victory of the season and third sweep of a divisional foe in as many outings.
 
Concordia enters the contest as the top scoring offense in the CACC and averages 75.9 points per game. Post is ranked third in the conference in scoring with 75.2 points per game. The Eagles lead the league and are ninth nationally in three-point field goal percentage (41.5), and assists (15.1). Senior Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) is the individual leader in assists with 6.6 per game.

Junior Devin Willis of the Post University men's basketball team hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Eagles over the host Caldwell Cougars in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 60-57. Willis netted a team-high 16 points and shot 6-for-12 from the field.
 
Junior Jerry Cummings turned in his second straight double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season. Classmates Zach Krischer and Effrin Ellison chipped in nine and eight points, respectively. Senior Jake Wilcox notched six assists and scored three points, all at the foul line.
 
Post (11-6, 7-3 CACC) trailed 57-53 with 1:02 to play when Wilcox hit a pair of free throws to pull the Eagles within two. After the defense caused a Caldwell (5-12, 1-7 CACC) turnover, Willis hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to give Post a 58-57 lead. On the ensuing Cougars' possession, Cummings drew a charge and the Eagles made a pair of foul shots to ice the game.
 
Game-Winning Shots:
With less than 30 seconds to play in games over the last two years, Post has hit three game-winning shots. On Jan. 12, Devin Willis hit the game-winning triple against Caldwell to break a 57-57 tie and lift the Eagles to a three-point victory. Last season, Zach Krischer hit three-pointers to give Post wins over Bridgeport (Dec. 19) and Queens (Jan. 2). Krischer hit the shot against Bridgeport with 14 seconds to play, while his triple against Queens came with two seconds remaining.
 
Twenty Or More:
In Post's 16 games this season, four different players have eclipsed 20 points 13 times. Against AIC on Dec. 30, junior Zach Krischer netted 30 points, the highest total to date this season. The last 30-point performance by a Post player was by Trevon Hamlet. He netted 32 points against Bloomfield on Feb. 17, 2010. Below is a list of all the 20-point performances this season.

When Post scores at least 70 points it sits at 10-1 this season while it is 0-3 when held below the threshold. In their victories the Eagles average 81.4 points per game. The team has netted a season-high 94 points in its last two contests. Post defeated Felician 94-70 on Dec. 19, and fell to AIC 96-94 in double overtime on Dec. 30. The output was the highest since the Eagles netted 99 points in a double overtime loss against Concordia on Jan. 19, 2011.
 
Among The Nation's Elite:
In the NCAA Division II statistics report released on Jan. 10, Post is ranked in the top 10 in the country in a pair of categories. The Eagles sit fourth in three-point field goals made per game (10.6) and ninth in three-point field goal percentage (42.0).
 
Powered By Individuals:
Four Eagles' student-athletes are ranked in the top 20 nationally in six statistical categories. Jake Wilcox leads the conference and is ranked eighth nationally with 6.7 assists per game. He is also 17th in steals per game with an average of 2.88. Wilcox sits 35th in assist-to-turnover ratio with a mark of 2.33. Sarunas Jackson is ranked 17th in blocks per game and deflects 2.2 shots per night. Zach Krischer is seventh in the nation in three-point field goals made per game with a mark of 3.56 and he is 43rd in three-point field goal percentage. He is shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc this year.
 
Eight Straight Wins:
After its season-opening loss to Molloy on the road, Post won eight straight contests, including four at home. The winning streak is the longest under head coach Al Sokaitis and it has matched the longest in the program's NCAA Division II history. The streak was snapped in a 70-66 overtime defeat against CACC foe Chestnut Hill on Saturday, Dec. 8.
 
Career Day In First Collegiate Start:
Freshman Gediminas Juozapavicius made an impact in his first collegiate start against Bloomfield on Jan. 3, as he netted a career-high 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field. He played a season-high 26 minutes against the Deacons.
 
CACC Player Of The Week:
Junior guard Stephen Perry was named the CACC men's basketball player of the week on Tuesday, Nov. 27. In a pair of Post home wins, Perry shot 10-for-15 from three-point range and 11-for-18 from the field as Post collected home wins over Concordia and Queens last week. He netted 22 points in the team's second straight CACC win, an 87-70 decision over Concordia, to open the season, including six triples made. Perry rounded out the week with a 5-for-7 performance from the floor as he scored 15 points against Queens in an 83-67 win. For the week, he shot a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line and averaged 18.5 points per game in the victories.
 
Double-Doubles:
This season, Jerry Cummings has notched four double-doubles. He has notched double-digit points and rebounds in each of the last two games. In the Eagles' first win, a 79-78 overtime victory over Queens, Cummings turned in 23 points and 10 rebounds. Against Wilmington on Dec. 1, he netted 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Post's 80-60 win over CACC foe Wilmington. On Jan. 9, he netted 12 points and snatched 10 rebounds as the Eagles swept Nyack for the third straight season. On Jan. 12, he tied for the team lead in scoring with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
 
Dialed In From Distance:
Over a seven-game span from Nov. 14 – Dec. 4, the Eagles are shooting 48.1 percent (90-for-187) from three-point range. During the stretch, Post did not shot less than 43 percent from three-point range. The Eagles hit a season-high 16 triples and shot 64 percent from beyond the arc in an 86-48 win at Nyack on Nov. 14. As a team, Post has shot greater than 50 percent from distance in three games during the stretch.
 
All-Time Series With Concordia:
The Eagles have won the last three meetings in the series with Concordia and sits at 6-3 all-time. With a win on Tuesday, Post can sweep the regular season series with the Clippers in back-to-back years.

Scouting the Clippers:
Concordia snapped a two-game skid with a 72-60 win over Nyack on Jan. 12, and it now stands at 7-12 overall and 3-6 in the CACC. The Clippers lead the conference in scoring with 75.9 points per game and boast four individuals in double figures, led by Norman Pope who pours in 17.3 points per game. He is tied for third in the CACC in scoring and second in the league in field goal percentage (46.4). Argelix Gil is second on the team in scoring with 16.5 points per game and he is second in the CACC in rebounding with 10.7 rebounds per contest.

Powered by 22-point performances by juniors Jerry Cummings and Stephen Perry, Post earned a 87-70 victory over Concordia in CACC action at the Drubner Center Tuesday night. The win gave the Eagles their first 2-0 start in conference play since 2007-08 and marked the fourth straight victory, the longest win streak since an eight-game stretch in during the 2010-11 campaign.
 
Perry shot 6-for-11 from the field and went 6-for-9 from long distance in the contest. He also went 4-for-4 at the foul line. Cummings shot 8-for-16 from the floor and went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Senior Jake Wilcox notched 11 assists against just one turnover. As a team, Post (4-1, 2-0 CACC) totaled eight blocks.
 
The Eagles opened the game on a 10-1 run over the first 4:19 of the contest. Juniors Devin Willis and Zach Krischer scored on consecutive possessions. Willis converted a jumper and Krischer hit his lone triple of the stanza. Willis split a pair of free throws and Cummings scored the last four points of the run on a layup and a jumper.

Receiving Votes:
For three straight weeks, Post received votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top 25. On Dec. 11, the Eagles garnered four votes and were 28 votes behind #25 Alaska-Anchorage. Post began receiving national consideration on Nov. 27.

Internationally Known:
Post men's basketball head coach Al Sokaitis was named the Tanzania national head coach of the men's and women's basketball programs on Aug. 29. The goal is for the country to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
 
Preseason Prognostications:
The Eagles were tabbed to finish third in the North Division of the CACC Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Monday, Nov. 12. Post totaled 59 points and one first place vote from the league's 13 head coaches. Sokaitis' team was picked behind Bloomfield and Dominican in the North Division.
 
On The Horizon:
Post will return to the Drubner Center on Wednesday, Jan. 23, when it hosts Dominican in a CACC North Division contest. The Chargers are receiving votes in the NABC Division II Top 25 and are riding a 10-game win streak. Dominican is 13-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play.
