WATERBURY, Conn. – Powered by 22-point performances by juniors
Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) and
Stephen Perry (Westhampton, N.J.), the Post University men's basketball team earned a 87-70 victory over Concordia in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at the Drubner Center Tuesday night. The win gives the Eagles their first 2-0 start in conference play since 2007-08 and marked the fourth straight victory, the longest win streak since an eight-game stretch in during the 2010-11 campaign.
Perry shot 6-for-11 from the field and went 6-for-9 from long distance in the contest. He also went 4-for-4 at the foul line. Cummings shot 8-for-16 from the floor and went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Senior
Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) notched 11 assists against just one turnover. As a team, Post (4-1, 2-0 CACC) totaled eight blocks, led by three from senior
Sarunas Jackson (Inland Empire, Calif.).
The Eagles opened the game on a 10-1 run over the first 4:19 of the contest. Juniors
Devin Willis (Seattle, Wash.) and
Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scored on consecutive possessions. Willis converted a jumper and Krischer hit his lone triple of the stanza. Willis split a pair of free throws and Cummings scored the last four points of the run on a layup and a jumper.
Junior
Derrick Strong (Omaha, Neb.) capped a 7-0 run a three-pointer with 6:39 to play in the opening half to give Post its largest margin of the stanza, a 14-point margin. Strong scored the last five tallies of the spurt and Jackson added a layup. Following his lone three-point attempt of the half, Post held a 29-15 lead.
Concordia (1-4, 0-2 CACC) closed the half on a 9-0 run over the final 3:39 to pull to within five, 31-26, at the intermission. It opened the second half with the first four points to pull to within one, 31-30 at the 19:14 mark of the second period. However the run was silenced by a Krischer triple to make the margin 34-30 with 18:56 to play.
With the score tied at 37-37, Cummings jump started a 10-2 Eagles' run that spanned 2:21. He started the first four points and Willis and Krischer added three-point field goals. Post closed the contest on an 8-2 run over the final 4:27 of the game. The Eagles ended the contest with their largest lead of the night, a 17-point margin, 87-70.
For the game, Post shot 12-for-29 from three-point range and went 21-for-29 from the free throw line. The Eagles outshot the Clippers from the field and went 39.7 percent and held Concordia to 36 percent from the floor. Post committed just six turnovers and compiled 14 assists and it forced 14 Concordia miscues.
The Eagles will return to action at the Drubner Center on Saturday, Nov. 24, when they host Queens College in a non-conference game. The opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
