Awwad’s Two Touchdown Receptions Highlight 37-14 Loss At Navy

Post Scores First For Second Consecutive Week, Falls To Defending CSFL Champions

ANNAPOLIS, Md.
– Despite an early 7-0 lead for the second consecutive week and two touchdown receptions by senior wide receiver Daniel Awwad (Waterbury, Conn.), the Post University sprint football team lost a Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) contest to defending league champions, Navy 37-14 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
 
For the game, Awwad finished with five catches for 88 yards. Defensively, senior Kyle Lagasse (Waterbury, Conn.) led the Eagles in tackles with 11.5, including five solo stops.
 
Post (0-2, 0-2 CSFL) struck first when freshman quarterback Shawn Boose (San Diego, Calif.) connected with Awwad with a 55-yard touchdown pass on third-and-nine. He was in single coverage down the right sideline where he was found by Boose in stride for the score. The Eagles held a 7-0 lead with 9:32 to play in the opening quarter.
 
Over the final 19:28 of the first half, Navy (3-0, 2-0 CSFL) scored 24 unanswered points on a Dan Gilmore touchdown rush, a Chris Mershon fumble recovery in the end zone an Adri Montecinos field goal and a Jesse Holian touchdown reception. The Midshipmen led 24-7 at the intermission.
 
In the opening half, Awwad caught two passes for 68 yards and a score, and freshman Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) caught two passes for 20 yards. Defensively, sophomore Matt Santos (Waterbury, Conn.) tallied a forced fumble and classmate Mark Wingster (Bridgeport, Conn.) added a recovery.
 
With the Eagles behind 31-7 late in the third quarter, they engineered an eight-play, 55-yard drive over a span of 4:20. Post converted a fourth-and-one play from the Navy 46-yard line. On the next play, sophomore Dwayne Carter (Anchorage, Alaska) found Boose for a 44-yard gain. Awwad caught his second touchdown pass of the night on third-and-goal from the three-yard line to make the score 31-14.
 
In the game, the Eagles held an edge in time of possession and kept the ball for 31:21. Individually, Navy was paced offensively by Corey Garcia who totaled 89 yards on 21 carries.
 
Post will travel to Princeton for its week three matchup with the Tigers. The game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.
