WATERBURY, Conn. – Behind a season-high 21 points from sophomore guard
Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.), the Post University men's basketball earned its third straight win, after a 79-75 triumph over Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game Saturday afternoon at the Drubner Center.
Krischer scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, and he shot 4-for-5 from distance in the stanza. He finished the game 7-for-9 from the field. Juniors
Jerry Cummings (La Plata, Md.) and
Sarunas Jackson (Corona, Calif.) chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Eagles went on a 21-7 run to close the first half over the final 6:59 of the period. Senior
Geraldo Fernandez (Monticello, N.Y.) scored the first six points of the spurt. His jumper with 6:18 to play in the first half gave Post a 1-point advantage, 27-26. Krischer added 11 points during the spurt, including a triple as time expired in the stanza. The Eagles held a 10-point advantage, 43-33, at the break.
Chestnut Hill (17-9, 10-4 CACC) began the second half on a 10-2 run to make a 10-point halftime deficit a two-point Post advantage, 45-43, with 15:56 to play. The Griffins cut the lead to one, 49-48, on a three-pointer by Jakeem Bogans with 12:09 to play.
However, the Eagles responded with a 9-2 spurt over a span of 2:43 to extend the lead back to eight, 58-50, to hold the Griffins at bay. During the run, Cummings totaled five points, while Jackson and Fernandez added field goals.
With 4:13 to play, Chestnut Hill, which entered the day in a tie for first place in the CACC South Division, got as close as one, 64-63, on a Luke Dickson layup. However, Post scored 11 of the next 15 points to grow the lead back to seven, 74-67, with 1:34 to play to secure the victory.
With Post trailing 19-11 with 11:29 to play in the opening half, the Eagles scored five straight points to cut the deficit to four. Krischer started the stretch with his first of four triples in stanza. Junior
Mike Stepovich (Fairbanks, Alaska) hit a pair of free throws to make the score 19-16 in favor of the Griffins with 9:59 remaining in the period.
The Eagles shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the field in the game and 7-for-12 from three-point range. Individually, junior guard
Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) had nine assists and shot 5-for-5 from the foul line. Cummings finished with a team-high six rebounds. Dan Comas led Chestnut Hill with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
The men's basketball team will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Drubner Center when it hosts CACC North Division leader Bloomfield. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
