Men’s Basketball Falters Late In 73-68 Loss To St. Anselm

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Post University men's basketball team built a 20-point lead with 14:26 to play in the second half, but St. Anselm closed the game on a 35-13 run to steal a 73-68 non-conference contest at the Drubner Center on Sunday afternoon. Junior guard Zach Krischer (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led a trio of Eagles in double figures with 14 points, and he shot 50 percent from the field.
 
Krischer finished the game 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc. Junior Jerry Cummings (Queens, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points and classmate Stephen Perry (Westampton, N.J.) added 10 points, all of which were scored in the first half. Senior Jake Wilcox (Kent, Wash.) contributed six assists, six rebounds and four steals.
 
Post (8-3) led 7-6 early before it went on an 11-4 run over span of 5:29 to take an 18-10 lead with 10:09 to play in the first half. Senior Sarunas Jackson (Inland Empire, Calif.) netted a pair of foul shots to start the run, while Wilcox, Cummings and Perry added two-point field goals. Junior Derrick Strong (St. Louis, Mo.) drained a three-pointer.
 
After Roy Mabrey hit a triple to pull St. Anselm (7-2) within seven, 25-18, the Eagles scored 18 of the final 27 points of the stanza. Krischer hit consecutive three-pointers, the second of which turned into a four-point play. Perry gave Post its largest lead of the half, a 17-point margin after he hit a three-pointer with 1:08 to play.
 
In the final six seconds of the half, junior Travis Carbajal (Oklahoma City, Okla.) dunked over a Hawks' defender and blocked a St. Anselm shot as time expired to send the Eagles into the locker room with a 43-27 lead.
 
The Eagles extended the lead to 20 points, their largest of the game, with 14:26 to play in the second half. Krischer hit a three-pointer to give Post a 53-33 advantage. However, the Hawks closed the game on a 35-13 run over the final 12:50 of the contest.
 
St. Anselm took its first lead of the game with 2:36 to play on a Mabrey layup. After the Hawks took a 67-66 lead, Jackson hit a layup on the ensuing possession to give the Eagles a one-point lead back. St. Anselm scored the final six points of the contest to arrive at the final margin.
 
The Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the field in the game and 8-for-16 from three-point range. Post went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc in the first half. It outscored St. Anselm in the paint 36-22, and netted 22 points off 15 Hawks' turnovers. Individually, Mike McCahey netted a game-high 21 points for St. Anselm.
 
Post will return to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 19, as it continues a four-game homestand against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) foe Felician. Game time is set for 8 p.m. CPTV Sports will film the game, which will be tape delayed and air at a later date.
