Daniel Awwad (Waterbury, Conn.) hauled on two touchdown receptions and Post defeated Franklin Pierce 29-21 at Oakmont Regional High School. The Eagles ended the season on a program-best five-game win streak and conclude the year at 5-2.
The inaugural victory in the all-time series between Post and Franklin Pierce, the Eagles won B & G Sports CSFL Talon Cup, a trophy that will be awarded to the winner of the matchup each year.
Awwad hauled in two passes for a game-high 72 yards. Sophomore quarterback
Dwayne Carter (Anchorage, Alaska) completed 10 passes with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Freshman
Quinton Bryant (Atlanta, Ga.) totaled 84 yards rushing to lead the Eagles in the ground game. Defensively, junior
Shaquille Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) led Post with 10 tackles, two of which were in the back field. He added a quarterback sack.
After Franklin Pierce (1-4) pulled to within 22-21 with 14:05 to play in the contest, Awwad added an insurance touchdown with 8:45 to play in the game. He caught a 10-yard pass from Carter to cap a 10-play, 59 yard drive that spanned 5:40. His second touchdown catch of the night, Awwad gave Post a 29-21 advantage.
Franklin Pierce began a drive from its own 19-yard line and 1:55 to play. On the sixth play of the drive, junior
Brendan McWeeney (Watertown, Conn.) intercepted a Justin Langhill pass at the Post 42-yard line to secure the victory for the Eagles.
The Ravens took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an Abrams 61-yard touchdown rush on the first play from scrimmage. However, freshman
Jay'Len Mahan (Waterbury, Conn.) returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to knot the score at 7-7 at the 13:15 mark of the opening stanza.
The back-and-fourth first half continued as Franklin Pierce claimed a 13-7 lead after a 40-yard touchdown scamper by Abrams with 14:13 left in the second quarter. Junior
David Boyle (Waterbury, Conn.) blocked the extra point to keep Post within six.
Awwad briefly leveled the score at 13-13 with 13:22 to play in the opening half as he reeled in a 63-yard pass from Carter. Franklin Pierce returned the blocked extra point for a score and two points to seize a 15-13 lead.
Freshman
Shawn Boose (San Diego, Calif.) gave the Eagles the lead for good after he caught a 52-yard pass from Carter. The score gave Post a 19-15 lead, one it would take to the intermission.
As a team Post gained 308 yards of total offense, highlighted by 228 yards passing. The Eagles went 2-for-2 on red zone conversions with a touchdown and a field goal. The defense allowed just 166 yards of total offense by Franklin Pierce, the third game this season with less than 170 yards allowed. The defense held Franklin Pierce to 2-for-13 on third down.
The 2012 season comes to a close with a program-record in wins (five), Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) wins (four), and fewest losses (two).
