WILMINGTON, Del. – The Post University volleyball team defeated Goldey-Beacom 3-2 on Friday night in Wilmington, Del. to clinch a berth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament for the second consecutive season. Set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20, and 15-6. The Eagles will be making their 10
th appearance in the conference tournament in the last 11 years.
Four Eagles posted double-digit kills, led by senior
Kelly Hayes (South Orange, N.J.) with 16 and graduate student
Kelli Reynolds (Stamford, Conn.) with 15. Sophomore
Julia Slyaktina (Moscow, Russia) tied her season-high with 51 assists and six service aces. Hayes and graduate student
Vanessa Ramos (Milford, Conn.) both posted season-high dig totals with 28 and 26, respectively. Senior
Monique Chance had a season-high six block assists.
After falling behind 2-1 in the match, the Eagles built an early lead in the fourth set. Two straight aces by Slyaktina sparked an 8-2 run to put Post ahead 16-10 and force a timeout by Goldey-Beacom. An error by the Lightning gave the Eagles their largest lead of the set at 19-12. Hayes had 12 digs in the set.
Post easily took care of the Lightning in the final set as it opened a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Reynolds scored a kill to give the Eagles a 9-4 advantage. Post went on a 6-2 run from there to close out the match. Hayes and Reynolds combined for eight kills in the deciding set.
The teams traded points during the opening set before a 4-0 run by the Lightning gave them a 17-13 advantage and forced a timeout by Post. The Eagles pulled within one late after a kill by junior
Emily Wilman (Perth Amboy, N.J.) made the score 24-23. Junior
Stephanie Zarakas (Patterson, N.Y.) scored three kills in the stanza.
Two consecutive aces by Slyaktina gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead in the second set. Goldey-Beacom answered with a 6-1 run to pull within one at 7-6. Post built its lead back up to six at 19-13, helped by three kills by Reynolds. The Lightning cut the deficit to 22-21 before a kill by Hayes ended the set.
With the score tied 6-6, Goldey-Beacom staged a 10-3 run to take command of the third set at 16-9. The Eagles closed the deficit to 16-12 after an ace by Ramos. Wilman scored a kill late in the stanza to pull Post within three at 21-18. Reynolds launched six kills in the set.
Post recorded season-high totals in attacks (196), assists (57), and blocks (12). Goldey-Beacom's Kadi McCoy led all players with 19 kills on the night.
The Eagles close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon at Wilmington. The Wildcats lead the CACC South Division at 25-5 overall and 17-1 in conference play. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
