PREVIEW: Men’s Basketball To Face Early Test At LIU Post

Post To Travel To Long Island For Saturday Non-Conference Matinee

The Post University men's basketball team will aim for its third straight win on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Pratt Recreation Center for a non-conference tilt with two-time defending East Coast Conference (ECC) champion LIU Post. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
 
The Eagles enter Saturday afternoon's tilt off a 38-point Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Nyack. The last time Post won a conference game by at least that margin was on Dec. 11, 2010. Post claimed a 94-55 win over the Warriors at the Drubner Center to move to 2-0 in league play at the time.

Post began its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener at Nyack on a 21-3 run and never looked back as the Eagles won their second straight game by a score of 86-48 on Tuesday night a Bowman Gymnasium. Junior Jerry Cummings paced the offense with a game-high 20 points and junior Travis Carbajal led all players with 10 rebounds.
 
For the game, Post (2-1, 1-0 CACC) shot 50 percent from the field and 64 percent (16-for-25) from three-point range. Cummings mad five triples in the contest to lead nine Eagles who hit at shot from long distance. Individually, senior Jake Wilcox and junior Effrin Ellison netted 10 points apiece. Wilcox added six assists and three steals.
 
Hot Start:
Through the first three games this year, Jerry Cummings leads the team in scoring with 15 points per game. He has eclipsed 20 points in each of the last two outings. Additionally, he is averaging 9.7 rebounds per night and Cummings nailed five triples in the victory at Nyack on Wednesday night.
 
First Career Double-Double:
Cummings tallied his first career double-double in Post's 79-78 overtime victory behind 23 points and 10 rebounds. In his first two contests this season, he pulled down 10 boards in each game. For his efforts last week, Cummings was given a CACC Honorable Mention.
 
All-Time Series With LIU Post:
The Eagles stand at 1-4 all-time against LIU Post. The teams have met each of the last three seasons, and Post's lone win came at the Drubner Center on Nov. 28, 2010, a 77-73 triumph in head coach Al Sokaitis' first season in Waterbury.

Scouting the Pioneers:
Despite its early 0-2 start this season with losses to #10 Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire, LIU Post was tabbed to three-peat in the ECC in the conference's preseason poll. The Pioneers are paced by reigning ECC First Team choices Vaughn Allen and Tobin Carberry who have notched 20 and 15 points per game respectively. Tyuan Williams leads the rebounding efforts with 11.5 boards per contest. As a team, LIU Post is shooting 42.2 percent from the field. The Pioneers were receiving votes in the NABC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Post dropped its fifth straight contest to open the season as it fell 77-65 in its home opener. Despite an early 12-5 advantage for the Eagles, the Pioneers came out of the locker room on a 17-5 run to break the game open as they lead 54-37. Tobin Carberry scored 12 points during the stretch. Post cut the lead to 57-51 with 10:41 left, but could draw no closer.
 
Sharp Shooter:
Last season, Zach Krischer led the CACC in three-point field goal percentage with a mark of 48.2. In fact his percentage from distance was better than his overall field goal percentage (47.7). Nationally, Krischer sat 82nd in three-point field goals made per game with an average of 2.39.
 
Internationally Known:
Post men's basketball head coach Al Sokaitis was named the Tanzania national head coach of the men's and women's basketball programs on Aug. 29. The goal is for the country to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
 
Preseason Prognostications:
The Eagles were tabbed to finish third in the North Division of the CACC Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Monday, Nov. 12. Post totaled 59 points and one first place vote from the league's 13 head coaches. Sokaitis' team was picked behind Bloomfield and Dominican in the North Division.
 
On The Horizon:
Post will host Concordia in its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Game time is set for 8 p.m. at the Drubner Center. The Clippers are currently 0-3 on the season and dropped a 90-81 decision to Dominican in their CACC opener on Wednesday night.
