ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman quarterback
Shawn Boose (San Diego, Calif.) guided the Post University sprint football team to its second overtime victory of the season with a one-yard run to give the visitors a 13-6 victory at Cornell on Friday night in a Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) game. With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-2 overall and in the CSFL and ensured its first winning season in program history. Additionally, first year head coach
Michael Mannetti became the program's all-time leader in wins.
Boose finished the contest with a game-high 132 yards, which marks the third 100-yard output in program history. He scored the game's lone touchdown in the extra session. Defensively, Post did not surrender a touchdown for and it allowed less than 155 yards for the second time this season. The Eagles held the Big Red to negative five yards rushing and 158 yards passing. Post turned in season-highs in tackles for loss with 12 and quarterback sacks with five. Freshman
Vincent Fumarola (Frankfort, N.Y.) led the defense with 7.5 tackles, including two stops in the backfield.
Post got on the board with 3:36 left in the opening half on a 26-yard field goal by senior
Peter Cleary (Waterford, Ireland). However, Cornell (3-3, 2-3 CSFL) tied the score at 3-3 with 13 seconds remaining in the second quarter. John Rodriguez converted a 29-yard attempt to level the score at the half.
Cleary and Rodriguez traded field goals in the fourth quarter.
The Big Red had a chance to win the game in the final minute of regulation. After a Boose interception, Cornell took over on the Post 27-yard line. On third down from the Post nine-yard line, Rodriguez missed a 26-yard field goal attempt with nine seconds remaining on the clock. After the Eagles took a knee to end regulation, the game went to overtime.
After Boose's touchdown run on the first possession of overtime, the Cornell drive stalled after it could not convert a 4
th-and-6 on the Post 21-yard line to end the game. The Big Red has not scored a touchdown in their last eight quarters of competition.
Individually, senior
Daniel Awwad (Waterbury, Conn.) finished the contest with five catches for 91 yards. Cleary went 2-for-4 on field goal attempts.
Post will round out the 2012 season when it travels to Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 4 p.m. The contest will be played at Oakmount High School.
