Men's Basketball Drops Double Overtime Heartbreaker

WATERBURY, Conn. (January 5, 2012) The Eagles had three shots in the final seven seconds of the second overtime, but were unable to find bottom of the net falling 74-73 to Dominican.

The Eagles got out to a quick lead on three pointers by Jerry Cummings and Jake Wilcox, going ahead 8-3 two minutes in. Dominican quickly answered and took the 9-8 lead with 16:20 remaining in the first. Post would not have a lead for the rest of the half as the Chargers were ahead 31-24 at the break. The Eagles did not shoot well in the first, converting on only 25% of their attempts.

Post struggled to start the second half as Dominican extended their lead to 39-29 with 12:29 remaining. Newcomer Jerry Cummings helped the Eagles slowly chip away from the deficit, scoring five straight points to make the score 45-41 at 8:22. A diving steal by Jake Wilcox at 4:03 led to an easy Josh Lopez layup that would tie the game at 52-52; and he would hit two free throws minutes later to give the Eagles a 54-52 lead.

With Post ahead 57-53 with 22 seconds remaining, Cory Quimby made an easy layup for Dominican. On the ensuing possession, a turnover by Zach Krischer led to another Charger layup that sent the game to overtime 57-57.

Jake Wilcox fouled out with 1:25 left in the first overtime with the scored tied at 63-63. Jose Araujo would make an appearance off the bench and provide a spark to the Eagle offense. After hitting two free throws, he grabbed a clutch offensive rebound and went to the line again to sink two more and give Post the 67-64 advantage with 32 seconds left. Leon Porter pulled up and nailed a three with 0:24 left to tie the score 67-67 and send it to a second overtime.

Post held a 73-70 lead late in the second extra period. With 43 seconds remaining, Quimby made a layup and was fouled. He would miss the free throw, but the Chargers would grab the offensive board. Porter was clutch again, hitting a jumper to give Dominican the 74-73 lead. The Eagles had three late chances but couldn't put one in.

Cummings led the Eagles with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Saurnas Jackson would add 13 points and 13 rebounds to go with his five blocked shots. Post shot just 30.8% on the night, but would outrebound Dominican 52-47. The CACC leading scorer, Corey Quimby, finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds.

Post will look to put this behind them as they host Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.
