Eagle Football Defeats Cornell 25-20 in Dramatic Fashion

Box Score

ITHACA, NY (September 23, 2011) Post University's football team won their first game of the 2011 season, defeating Cornell 25-20 in Ithaca, NY in dramatic fashion. It was the Eagles second win in program history and was a come from behind fourth quarter victory.

"This game was about facing adversity and answering the call,” said Pete Ewald, Eagles head coach. “We were down 13-6, had a field goal blocked, and missed an extra point. We scored to take the lead 13-12, then on the next drive they score, but we answered back with two more touchdowns. This team just hung in there and it is a credit to the players in this program to fight and get the win.”

The Eagles trailed the entire game and went into the fourth quarter down 13-6. At the end of the third, the Eagles began a drive with 4:11 to play and advanced to the Cornell 1 yard line. Rashawn Hendricks ran it in for the score putting Post up 13-12.

With 11:30 to play in the game and Cornell at the Post 27, Christopher Lopez forced a fumble that was picked up by Kyle Lagasse. Three plays later, with 9:40 to play freshman quarterback Erich Broadrick fired an 18 yard pass into the corner of the end zone to Tony Simpson making it 19-13 Eagles.

When Sastre hit the extra point, it was 20-13 and what seemed to be an easy road to victory.

That changed just 17 seconds later when Cornell's Abe Mellinger caught a 55 yard pass making it 20-19 Big Red after the extra point.

On the next drive, the Eagles advanced to the Cornell 19 putting the game in the hands of Francsico Sastre, a soccer player from Brazil playing in his first game who launched a kick into the left side of the upright falling just shy of a field goal.

The Eagle defense then stepped up one more time as Cornell could not advance up field.
Still down one, the Eagles regained possession at 4:09 and steadily moved toward the goal line. Broadrick went 4-5 for 39 yards on the final drive capped off by a Hendricks 7 yard rush making it 25-20 with 36 seconds remaining.

Cornell still had 31 seconds to score starting on their 44 yard line an advanced to the Eagle 44.
With seconds remaining in the game Justin Valazquez intercepted a pass by Timothy Bruhn ending the game with a 25-20 Eagle victory.

Broadrich would throw for 134 yards and Hendricks rushed for 56.

In the first half the game was very different with everything seemingly going Cornell's way.
Cornell got on the scoreboard first with a 39-yard field goal by John Rodriguez capping off an 18 yard drive. The Big Red would hold the lead through the end of the first quarter.

At 12:14 in the second quarter momentum started to swing the Eagles way. After Rodriguez missed a 45 yard field goal attempt, Dan Awwad made a 90 yards punt return, but the play was called back with a flag on the play.

On the next Cornell drive, Rodriguez hit a 36 yard field goal making it 6-0 with 9:29 to play in the half.
With 5:45 to play in the first half, Cornell Chse Funderburk punted the ball to the Eagle 24. After two rushes by Dashawn Wingate for a combined five yards, before Broadrick fired a 22 yard pass to Awwad advancing the Eagles to the Cornell 18.

Wingate rushed for two more yards putting Post on the Cornell 14. Rashawn Hendricks then rushed for 14 yards to tie the game at 6.

With only 47 seconds remaining in the half, the Big Red took advantage of good field position by starting at the Post 20 yard line and scoring to make it 13-6 going into the half. From there, the Eagles battled back in the second half to take a 25-20 victory.

Next week the Eagles take on Navy at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 4:30pm
