WATERBURY, Conn. (February 23, 2011)— Post University's Geraldo Fernandez drilled a game-winning three with 2.2 seconds to go, and Post University downed Caldwell College, 81-78 Wednesday night at the Drubner Center.
Fernandez raced up from the baseline, took a pass from Josh Lopez, rose up and fired a deep, NBA-range three-pointer. It hit nothin' but the bottom of the net.
Caldwell wasn't able to get off a shot, and when the buzzer sounded, Fernandez had added his name to a long list of Eagles heroes this season.
The 6-3 transfer led the high-flying Eagles (15-10, 13-4 CACC) with 22 points, and his game-winning three extended Post University's win streak to six games, the third longest streak in the last decade.
The Eagles had led 78-70 with just 48 seconds to go, but an inbounds play led to a wide-open three from Caldwell's Nik Otovic.
Otovic led the Cougars (9-16, 6-11 CACC) with 24 points.
The Eagles could not inbound the ball forcing a five second violation. Then the Cougars found junior Derrick Ross in the left corner to cut the lead to 78-76.
Cecil Stinson*, a 73 percent free throw shooter, missed two free throws at the other end. Cougar Anthony Gill raced up the court, pulled up from the foul line, and tied the game at 78 with 23 seconds to go.
That's when Fernandez jumped in the phone booth for Post University. In just 12 games with the team, Fernandez is averaging a team-leading 12.8 points per game.
Cecil Stinson* added 15 points for the Eagles, and Spencer Smith had a solid game, putting up 10 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
The Eagles also forced 22 turnovers in the game.
The Eagles will play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday against the University of the Sciences on senior day.
