WATERBURY, Conn. (February 17, 2011)—Just call him Mac Daddy.
Garvin McAlister scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and Post University defeated Dominican, 56-51, in a hotly contested battle Thursday at the Drubner Center.
McAlister hit a game-changing, falling-down three-pointer with 24 seconds left to give the Eagles a 52-48 lead, then knocked down two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to ice the 56-51 win.
Yeah, he's a coast-to-coast Mac.
McAlister also dished out 3 assists for Post University (13-10, 11-4 CACC), which trailed for much of the game before breaking out on an 16-0 run midway through the second half.
The scoring run was capped by a deep Geraldo Fernandez three, which gave the Eagles the lead for the first time, 38-37.
The Eagles outscored the Chargers 36-20 after halftime.
Rishawn Johnson scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Eagles, and put together a couple of sweet, Hakeem Olajuwon "Dream-shake" post moves that had Charger defenders reeling and the Drubner Center crowd erupting.
Dominican (14-12, 10-6 CACC) was led by center Almin Hodzic, who posted a rare double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Leon Porter added 11 points for the Chargers.
It wasn't pretty for Post University, but the Eagles won despite shooting just 21-for-72 (29 percent) from the field, including 4-for-23 from three-point range.
Post University relied on its rugged defense, holding Dominican to 40 percent from the field.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia University. Game time is set for 4 pm.
