WATERBURY, Conn. (February 15, 2011)—The Post University men's basketball team sent out two stern messages to the rest of the CACC in their 86-72 beatdown of league-leading Bloomfield College on Tuesday.
First, you don't just waltz into the hallowed halls of the Drubner Center and come away with the 'W'.
And second, if you sleep on these Eagles, you might not wake up.
Five different players scored in double figures, and Post University outclassed Bloomfield (15-8, 12-3 CACC), which had won five straight and boasts the league's leading scorer in senior guard Gage Daye (24.9 ppg).
The Eagles backcourt locked Daye down, holding him to just 10 points on 3 of 11 shooting, and frustrating him all game long.
Garvin McAlister and
Geraldo Fernandez paced Post University (12-10, 10-4, CACC), each pouring in 16 points. Fernandez added 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
Spencer Smith scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and
Cecil Stinson* and
Rishawn Johnson each scored 11 points for the Eagles.
Post University trailed just once the entire game, after an Ahmad Brooks layup made it 2-0 Bloomfield. The Eagles responded with a thunderous 20-6 run, capped by a
Geraldo Fernandez three-pointer that sent the packed Drubner Center crowd into euphoria.
The Eagles led 37-28 at halftime.
Bloomfield drew as close as five, after a pair of Ryan Rodrigues free throws closed the Eagles' lead to 61-56 with 6:51 to go.
But the Eagles answered with another Fernandez three, and a
Rishawn Johnson layup moments later gave the team a ten-point advantage with less than 5 minutes to play.
Post University held Bloomfield to just 36 percent shooting for the game, and forced 17 Deacons turnovers.
They also held the Deacons to 7-for-23 shooting from three-point range.
Conroy Hosier led Bloomfield with 14 points.
The Eagles return to the Drub' on Thursday, when they take on Dominican College. Tip is set for 8 pm.
