WATERBURY, Conn. (December 19, 2011) Zach Krischer hit a three-pointer with 0:13 remaining to give the Eagles a hard-fought 79-78 victory over Bridgeport. Post heads into the holiday break at 3-7 overall and 2-1 in CACC play.
The first half was back and forth as the lead changed hands five times. The Eagles largest lead came after James Lee stole the ball and was fouled on a fast break layup. He would make both free throws to push the score to 21-16.
The score was tied at 31-31 with 5:36 remaining when Darien David picked off a Jake Wilcox pass. Larry Smith sprinted down the court after him and swatted the layup, which led to an easy bucket for Post. Geraldo Fernandez would hit a three-pointer as time expired to give the Eagles a 40-37 heading into halftime.
Bridgeport came out strong to start the second half, opening up a 55-48 lead with 12:23 remaining. Darian David started scoring for the Purple Knights every time down the floor, as he scored 20 of his game-high 29 points in the half.
David hit a three-pointer with 2:42 remaining to put Bridgeport ahead 74-68. Josh Lopez answered back with a three of his own seconds later. After two free throws by the Knights made the score 76-71, Lopez hit another clutch shot from long distance to pull the Eagles within two with 1:47 left.
Dante Menter turned the ball over on Bridgeport's next possession and Jake Wilcox hit a running jumper in the lane to tie the game 76-76 with 0:53 left. David struck again with a shot from the baseline to give the visitors a 78-76 lead with 0:39 remaining.
Out of a Bridgeport timeout, the Eagles let the clock run down to 0:14 seconds until Wilcox drove and kicked the ball out to an open Krischer who nailed it from long distance to give Post 79-78 advantage. The Purple Knights had two chances at the end but could not tip the ball in and the Eagles, who were in foul trouble for most of the second half, held on of the victory.
Four Eagles starters scored in double-digits, led by Wilcox with 18. He also added six assists and three rebounds. Mike Stepovich went 8-for-12 from the floor, finishing with 17 points and six rebounds. Krischer was 3-for-4 from behind the arc and had 11 points in the victory.
The Eagles will be back in action on January 2 against Queens College.
