SCSU Tops Men’s Basketball 84-64 in Opener

BRIDGEPORT, Conn (November 12, 2011) Post University senior Josh Lopez led the Eagles with 13 points in the Eagles in a season opening 84-64 point loss against Southern Connecticut at the Bridgeport Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Owls opened up a 9-2 lead at the beginning of the contest and built a lead as high as 15 in the first half.

With 2:07 to play in the first stanza the Eagles cut the lead to only six making it 35-29 after consecutive buckets from newcomer Jake Wilcox. The first was a long range jumper trimming the lead to eight followed by a layup on the next possession.

Wilcox was strong in his Post University debut with nine points, six assists, and one rebound in 28 minutes of play.

Southern led at the half 39-29.

In the first six minutes of the second half the Owls extended their lead to 21 points, but with 8:56 to play Mike Stepovich hit a jumper to close the Eagles within 15. The Eagles could not get any closer in the half falling 84-64.

Stepovich had ten rebounds and six points on the day.

The Eagles spread the wealth throughout the contest with every player who saw playing time scoring at least one point. Zach Krischer added nine points in his first time wearing the Eagle uniform.

Post had a 24-13 advantage in offensive rebounds and had only ten turnovers compared to Southern's 20.

One of the major factors in the game was that the Eagles only had five free throws the entire game, while the Owls scored 15 on 21 attempts from the charity stripe.

Post University will take on UMass-Lowell in the second day of the Bridgeport Tournament on Sunday. Opening tip is set for 2pm.
