Eagles Lose Heartbreaker In West Point

WEST POINT, NY (October 21, 2011) In their first ever meeting, Post University and Army fought to the end, with the Black Knights coming up with the 57-43 victory. The loss puts the Eagles at 2-3 (2-3 CSFL) on the season with one game remaining.

The Eagles converted on two fourth downs on their first drive, including a trick pass where Dwayne Carter tossed it to Daniel Awwad who caught the defense sleeping as he passed to Jason Carlino for 21 yard. Carter eventually ran it in from four yards
out to give Post a 7-0 lead.

On Army's first drive, the Eagle defense held the Black Knights in check, forcing them to punt. Shaquille Williams stormed up the middle and blocked the punt at the Army 28. It was picked up by Donnell Lewis who ran it in for a score. Francisco Sastre missed the extra point and the Eagles led 13-0.

The Black Knights ran right down the field on their next drive, eventually scoring on a quarterback keeper by Javier Sustaita from 29 yards out to pull within six at 13-7 with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter. Post added another score near the end of the quarter when Carter connected with Awwad from 18 yards out making the score 19-7 after one.

Jashua Guadalupe forced a fumble on Army's first drive of the second quarter and the Eagles recovered on their own 41 yard line. After a nine play drive, Rashawn Hendricks ran it in from the one to put the Eagles ahead by 18 midway through the second quarter 25-7.

Army scored on their next drive on a 46-yard pass from Sustaita to Thomas Jeffers on fourth down, and grabbed the momentum. The rest of the half belonged to the Black Knights as they scored 21 unanswered points to take a 28-25 lead into halftime.

After stopping the Army offense on a fourth down on the Eagles 12 yard line midway through the third quarter, the Post offense stalled after a costly personal foul penalty. On the ensuing drive, Sustaita found Jeffers again to put Army ahead 35-25 after three.
The Eagles offense had some life at the start of the fourth quarter as they drove into Army territory before JP Cooper picked off his second pass of the game to end the threat.

After an Army punt, Post marched 77 yards down the field. Carter connected with Awwad on a 14 yard touchdown pass, but it was called back on a holding penalty. On fourth and 20 from the Army 24, Carter found Awwad again, but this one counted. The extra point was blocked but the Eagles pulled within four, 35-31 with 8:16 remaining.

The Black Knights started the next drive from their own 46, but after two penalties stood at first and 29 from the 27. Jeffers cut across the middle to catch the Sustaita pass and went 73 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game.

Carter led the Eagles down the field quickly. From the Army 39, he connected with a streaking Rashaun Reid for the score to cut the Army lead to 42-27.

Army got the ball back with 5:56 left to play trying to run the clock out as Sustaita ran up the middle. Matt Santos stripped the ball and Post recovered and ran to the Army 25. Four plays later, Carter dove across the goal line to give the Eagles a 43-42 lead with just over four minutes remaining, as the West Point crowd fell silent.

Sustaita drove the Black Knights right down the field, helped by an Eagles unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and took it in himself from six yards out. Army converted on a two-point conversion and took a 50-43 lead with 2:13 remaining.

The Eagles started the ensuing drive from their own 16 yard line. After an incompletion, Awwad caught a pass and took it to the Post 32 and it looked the Eagles were in business. The next pass was intercepted by Mario Turi and taken down to the Eagle 7 yard line to end the comeback bid. Sustaita added another rushing touchdown to close out the 57-43 Black Knight victory.

Carter finished the game 33-60 for 389 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also added two rushing scores. Reid finished with 11 catches for 151 yards and a score, Awwad had 10 for 138 and two touchdowns. On defense, Kyle Lagasse finished with 10 tackles.

Army was led by Sustaita eight total touchdowns. He went 25-29 for 353 yards and four scores and also had 76 rushing yards and four touchdowns. All of the passing scores went to Jeffers who finished with 220 yards and 11 catches.

The Eagles will travel to Mansfield next Saturday for their final home game of the season.
