WATERBURY, Conn. (January 12, 2011)--The Post University men's and women's basketball teams travel to Orangeburg, N.Y. tomorrow to take on conference rival Felician College in an important doubleheader.
The men's team looks to improve to 5-1 in conference play, and remain one game behind Bloomfield College in the race for the North Division championship.
The Eagles have had as many options as Vincent Chase in 'Entourage' on offense, with four players averaging in double figures on the season. Senior guard
Spencer Smith leads the team at 11.8 points per game.
Point guard
Garvin McAlister has also had a terrific season, averaging 11.1 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds per contest for Post University (6-7, 4-1 CACC).
So what do you get the team that has everything offensively? How about another scoring option in 6-3 junior guard
Geraldo Fernandez, who served as a late Christmas present for Eagles fans in his debut on Saturday.
The transfer from Sullivan Community College (N.Y.) scored 11 points and played intense, tough defense in the Eagles' 80-55 win.
Fernandez, of Monticello, N.Y., plays with a Dennis Rodman-like intensity that could help the Eagles soar towards a CACC championship.
Felician College (5-9, 1-5 CACC) is led by a pair of outstanding frontcourt players in seniors Devon Young and Suquan Gary.
Young is the conference's second-leading scorer, averaging 19.7 points per game. He's also a beast on the glass, averaging 7 rebounds per game, which is good enough for seventh in the CACC.
Gary is also having a terrific year, averaging 14.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for the Golden Falcons.
The women's game is also of utmost importance for the Eagles, who have won three straight and, at 4-2 in conference play, have the opportunity to claim sole possession of third place in the CACC North.
Freshman forward
Raven Wright-James has led the way, averaging 22.3 points per game in the team's three-game winning streak.
Wright-James exploded for a season-high 26 points in the Lady Eagles' 65-53 win over Mercy College on December 29, and followed that performance up with a team-leading 19 points in a thrilling 73-71 win over Wilmington University.
Junior guard
Kelli Reynolds has also been outstanding, averaging a team-leading 17.4 points per game in conference play.
Reynolds put up 18 points in the win over Wilmington, and knocked down a tough, contact-filled layup that proved to be the game-winner as the Eagles escaped a furious rally.
For her efforts, Reynolds was named Post University Female Athlete of the Week.
Felician (10-3, 4-2 CACC) is led by senior forward Quay Baskerville, who is the conference's leading scorer at 19.8 points per game.
The 5-11 Baskerville is also fifth in the CACC in rebounding, pulling down 9.5 boards per game.
The action begins with the women's game at 6 pm, followed by the men's contest around 8 pm.
