Penn Tops Eagles in Post University's First Ever Sprint Football Game 42-14; Derrick Chance Scores First Touchdown
Box Score
PHILADELPIA, PA (September 24, 2010) Post University sophomore Derrick Chance will go into the record book as being the first to score a touchdown in school history. Penn defeated the Eagles in their first sprint football game 42-14 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia Friday night.
Chance's touchdown came moments into the fourth quarter after an interception by David Boyle at the Eagle five yard line sent the offense onto the field late into the third quarter.
On the next drive, Post University slowly worked their way up field with short passes by quarterback Sir- Darryl Johnson. With time running out in the half, Johnson fired a 37 yard pass to Daniel Awwad who caught the ball on the Penn four yard line as time expired in the third quarter.
Two plays later at the one yard line, Chance cut to the left, leaped over a defender and into the end zone for the first touchdown in school history. The crowd of Eagle fans that traveled to Philadelphia for the game exploded with excitement as the scoreboard showed 28-6.
“When coach called my number he told me to smell the end zone so I jumped and got it,” said Chance. “In baseball you can score a run, in basketball you can make a shot, but in Football it takes the whole team to score and I am so proud of my teammates tonight. This is unbelievable.”
The Eagles would come up short on the two point conversion.
“I am proud of the way this team played tonight because we played with heart,” said Pete Ewald, Eagles Head Coach. “We have a lot to clean up, but our effort was there and I am proud of that the most. We played a very good experienced team; we played hard, learned a lot, and now can focus on Cornell next week.”
On the opening drive of the game Penn was poised to score and came within field goal range when senior Raiam Dos Santos missed the three-point attempt handing the ball off to Post University.
Defensively the Eagles made multiple stops in the first quarter, but could not stop Quaker Todd Busler from scoring the game's first touchdown with Santos connecting on the extra point. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-0.
As the second quarter approached, Penn attacked the Eagles offensively scoring three touchdowns with Santos clearing the uprights each time extending the Penn lead to 28-0 heading into the half.
After Chance's early fourth quarter touchdown, Penn added two more touchdowns scored by Mike Bagnoli and Chris Twombley.
When the Eagles got the ball back with less than ten minutes to play, they made another drive starting at their own 25 yard line.
With the ball on the Quaker five yard line, Johnson fired a pass deep into the right corner of the end zone caught by a back pedaling Rashaun Reid making it 42-12 Penn, with 5:13 to play. On the two point conversion, Chance ran to the left and extended his arm as he was tackled at the goal line scoring in the process.
Post University quarterback Sir-Darryl Johnson had 15 pass completions for 153 yards. Lee Knight ran for 45 yards, while Chris Tropasso ran for ten yards. Dan Koerber lead the team defensively with nine tackles.
Post University will travel to Ithaca, NY on Friday October 1 to play Cornell. Game time is set for 7pm.
