The third time is the charm for Post University. The Eagles recorded the first win in program history in just their third game, with a 33-18 victory over Princeton at Powers Field in Princeton, N.J.
Post University (1-2) dominated the Tigers (0-4), outgaining Princeton 430-226 and leading the entire way.
“It feels really good to get a win in our first year as a program and it means an awful lot,” head coach Pete Ewald said. “Many of these players thought they would never play football again after high school, they have been put in new positions they have never played before, their hard work and determination has them standing in Princeton as a team of winners.”
The Eagles rushed for 138 yards and four touchdowns as a team, and five different players scored touchdowns for Post University.
Curtis Knighton led the Eagles with 68 yards on the ground, including two touchdowns. Daniel Awwad led Post University with 85 yards receiving.
La'Sean Yates had the play of the night, scoring a game-changing touchdown that gave Post University a 20-6 lead with 7:27 left in the first half.
Yates broke off the line and sprinted untouched into the secondary, as no Tiger came within 10 yards of him. Sir-Darryl Johnson found him with a perfect pass for a 57-yard touchdown.
Asked what happened on the play, Yates explained, “To tell you the truth, I just ran straight. The safety bit down, and I put a little stall move on him, and that was it.”
The Eagles struck first, taking a 7-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown run by Curtis Knighton that capped off an impressive drive.
Post University faced two fourth downs on the drive, but converted both of them with relative ease before pounding the ball into the end zone.
On a fourth-and-six from the Princeton 37 yard line, punter Michael Figueroa took the snap and, instead of kicking the ball, found a wide-open Mike Chance for a 15-yard gain.
Three plays later, Sir-Darryl Johnson rushed for 7 yards on fourth-and-two, keeping the drive alive once again.
Knighton, who rushed for 68 yards, would cash in on his first of two touchdowns just two plays later. Kicker Donlejon King added the first extra point in school history, putting the Eagles up 7-0.
Princeton found the scoreboard with 2:05 left in the first quarter when quarterback Jaison Zachariah hit John Moffat for a 10-yard score. The Tigers would fail to convert on a two-point conversion try, leaving them trailing, 7-6.
But the Eagles weren't going to be denied. Post University scored on consecutive possessions, the first culminating on a 4-yard touchdown run by Derrick Chance, which gave the Eagles a 14-6 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Yates gave Post University a 20-6 lead with his 57-yard touchdown reception.
John Moffat led Princeton with 122 yards rushing, including a 15-yard touchdown run that cut the Eagles' lead to 26-18 with 4:39 left in the third quarter.
Post University extended its lead to 33-18 on a Chris Tropasso rushing touchdown in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
The Tigers were badly hurt by two fumbles inside the Post University 10-yard line in the fourth quarter, each with a chance to cut into a double-digit Eagles lead.
"It feels great to get the first victory for the program," defensive back Roger Subramani said. "Especially on my part, being the smallest kid on the team. I never thought I'd get the chance to play college football, and now here I am. We deserve it."
The Eagles will play their last game of the season on October 30 at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury against Mansfield University.
