MIDDLEBURY, Conn. -- Freshman
Vitalina Sokoliuk won her second consecutive Singles and Doubles matches for Post University Women's Tennis on Saturday afternoon against Bentley University at home, but the Eagles would come up short against the Falcons, falling 5-2 in the match and 0-15 overall.
THE BASICS
Post University 2, Bentley University 5
Post University (0-15)
Bentley University (2-10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a set of unusual circumstances, both teams would only have four players, choosing to split the #5 and #6 Singles points among each other, making the score even at one heading into the only two Doubles of the event. Sokoliuk and sophomore
Laura Kotala would win the #2 Doubles by a 6-3 score over sophomore Julie Madden and freshman Jordan Narciso, but the #1 Doubles went the way of Bentley, 6-3, as sophomore
Julie Merlin and freshman
Savannah Croft fell to sophomores Isabella Kaldy and Sonali Parasu.
With the Doubles splitting in that way, it was determined between the two sides that Bentley would be awarded the Doubles point, giving them a 2-1 lead entering the four Singles matches, in which they would take three of the four to come away with their second straight win after an 0-10 start.
Sokoliuk won the sole Singles for the Eagles, sweeping Kaldy with identical 6-3 scores in the #2 Singles, while Croft and Narciso did battle in the #3 Singles to a 7-5 and 6-1 decision in favor of Narciso. Both the #1 and #4 Singles would end up going to a 10-point tiebreaker set, as Merlin lost set one, 6-1, but won set two, 6-4, forcing that final set in which she lost, 10-4. As for Kotala against Madden in the #4 Singles, they would split the first two sets with 6-4 scores, before Madden took an exciting 14-12 win in the tiebreaker.
