Baseball Swept in Friday Doubleheader Against Bentley and Molloy University in Florida

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Pitching struggles for Post University Baseball would do them in during the first day of their three-day trip to Boca Raton, Florida, as the Eagles were downed by regional opponents Bentley University, 12-5, on Friday morning, before falling in seven innings to Molloy University in the afternoon. The Eagles have now lost two consecutive games and allowed 10-plus runs in six of their 14 games so far this season.

THE BASICS

Post University 5, Bentley University 12

Post University 1, Molloy University 11 (7 Innings)

Post University (5-9)

Bentley University (4-4)

Molloy University (4-3)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Between the two affairs, eight different pitchers saw the mound for Post against Bentley and Molloy, allowing a combined 23 runs (19 earned) on 23 hits, while walking and striking out 11 batters and allowing four home runs. All pitchers except sophomore right-hander Logan Pulitano allowed two-plus runs, as Pulitano threw one inning against the Lions, the fourth inning, in which he allowed one unearned run with two walks and a hit allowed.

Senior catcher Manny Contreras was one of only three Post hitters to record multiple hits across the doubleheader, finishing with a team-high three hits, going 3-for-5 overall with a double, RBI, run scored, and two walks, raising his season batting average to .375, which currently leads the team with graduate outfielder Andrew Hartman close behind at .341 following his 1-for-6 day with a double and an RBI. The only other Post hitters to finish with multiple hits on the day were freshman infielder Max DeFrancesco (2-for-6) and sophomore outfielder Jayren Foster (2-for-8).

The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in their first game of the day against Bentley behind a Hartman sacrifice fly and a passed ball issued to senior catcher Thomas Goonan, which the Falcons responded to with two runs of their own via a single from graduate outfielder Stan DeMartinis III and a sacrifice fly from junior utility player Brendan Sencaj. Post would regain a two-run advantage on doubles from both Foster and DeFrancesco in the third, only to be met with an RBI single from junior infielder Jimmy Mitchell and a solo shot from Sencaj to tie things back up by the fifth.

The last lead of the entire day for the Eagles between the two games came on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly from Contreras as the Falcons scored the next eight runs with both Mitchell and Sencaj contributing all eight runs. Sencaj finished going 1-for-3 with six RBIs, including a grand slam in the eighth, while Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a three-run double leading to a four-RBI game in the 12-5 win for Bentley.

Sophomore infielder Gill Dolan would give Post their only run against the Lions later on in the day with his sacrifice fly in the third to tie the game at one all, before Molloy went on to score the next 10 runs to force a mercy rule in the seventh inning with junior infielder Brian Sacnhez's two-run double. Sacnhez, along with senior outfielder Jack Coogan and junior infielder Mike Sweeney, propelled the Lions' offense to the 11-1 win as Coogan was 3-for-4 with three RBIs with his double and single, while Sweeney was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored from his two-run home run in the third that gave Molloy the lead for good.
